I think Steve Howe was an all-state player for Grant County during that undefeated regular season. Not sure if Grant County won the regional but they did lose in the district finals to Eminence.

 

1979 first round loss to eventual champ, Lafayette. Lafayette 77, Grant Co. 51, so that would make them 32-2?

That sounds correct. Eminence had a guard named Lamont Sleets who played at Murray State. He led Eminence to the big upset over Grant County in the district finals. I was not sure if Eminence won the regional or Grant County.

Didn't Mason County go 31-1 in 82' with a loss in the state finals vs. Simon Kenton?

 

Not 82 finals I'm pretty north Hardin lost in the finals to Paul Andrews long shot

Maybe it was 1981 and not 1982. You might be right!

 

I quickly looked in the big history books and assumed it was 81, then I turned around and said 82. I know it was around then.

15th Region:

 

1922: Paintsville was 2-0 and lost to Pikeville Academy in the 16th District Title Game (no regions at that time) by a final of 28-12. Pikeville Academy finished 10-5 that season and were coached by Oren C. Kessinger. Painstville was coached by John Sterling Jackson. At that time the ball was jumped at center court after every made basket, thus the low scoring. You could also elect to shoot FT's or take the ball out on fouls. Needless to say if you could win the tip everytime you could feasibly not give the ball to your opponent the entire game.

 

1924: Pikeville was 14-0 going into the first game of the state tournament before losing to Ft. Thomas 25-19. Chester Ray Clark was the Head Coach of Pikeville that season.

 

1934: Inez was 32-0 going into the state tournament quarterfinals and were defeated by Hazel Green 34 to 16. Russell Williamson was the Head Coach of Inez that season.

 

1936: Inez was 31-0 going into the state tournament semifinals before losing to Nebo 21-18. Russell Williamson was the head Coach of Inez that season.

 

1939: Garrett High School was 26-0 going into the 15th Region Championship game. They lost that game to Inez 33-20. Inez finished the year 40-5. Inez was coached by Russell Williamson, Garrett was coached by Bill Mayo.

 

1955: Meade Memorial was 32-0 going into the 15th Region Championship game and lost to Pikeville by a final of 61-47. Pikeville finished 26-6 on the season. Pikeville was coached by John B. Trivette and Meade was coached by Paul Butcher. Meade had defeated Pikeville at Pikeville earlier in the season by 21. The championship game was played at Paintsville.

 

There are a few that went undefeated on the Girls' side in the 15th Region as well but thats for a different thread. These are the ones I have from the 15th Region dating back to 1916.

 

No team has gone undefeated (winning the state championship) in the 15th Region in Boys' or Girls' basketball. The ones above were Boys' regular season undefeated teams.

Bowling Green completed a perfect 25-0 regular season in 98/99, which would have been Josh Carrier's sophomore year. They won those 25 games by an average of 24.6 points per game, allowing only 52.6 PPG. They ultimately took it all the way to 27-0, winning the district despite a slowdown game from Warren East in the district semis that they won only 17-15, before falling to Russellville in the first round of the 4th Region tournament 55-52. As with the year before, Bowling Green had beaten Russellville in the regular season before losing to them in the region tournament. Russellville would eliminate Bowling Green the following two years as well.

 

Only six of the teams Bowling Green played in the regular season stayed within double digits of them.

My mother told me about this one:

 

Butler County went 25-0 in 1974 as part of the 12th District. At the time, it was a five team district, as Clarkson, Leitchfield, and Caneyville were in their final year before combining into Grayson County High the following season. Butler County won a quarterfinal against Clarkson, but had to take on Edmonson County in the semifinals due to the draw. They played the district semifinals at WKU due to anticipated crowd for that game, and 6,000 people saw Edmonson County win 62-60 to end Butler County's best season ever at 26-1. To my knowledge, their 21-8 record two years later is the only time since that they've had single digit losses.

Apollo indeed was undefeated in the regular season in the 77-78 season. It won the Third Region but then lost to Charles Hurt and Shelby County in the first round of the state tournament, finishing 35-1.

 

But what may be the more interesting story from that season involved the Drakesboro Cardinals. Like Apollo, Drakesboro went undefeated in the 77-78 regular season and faced off against Apollo in the 3rd Region final. At some point while the game was still close, there was a questionable call that went against Drakesboro (and in favor of Apollo's Steve Barker, Apollo's best scorer and its current head coach) that was followed by a technical foul against Drakesboro and Apollo pulled away to win 78-54. I'm afraid some Drakesboro folks still haven't gotten over that one.

 

But what I would like to know more about is that, after going undefeated in the regular season and finishing 27-1 in the 77-78 season, Drakesboro finished 0-25 in the 78-79 season. Quite the turnaround. I would love to hear more about how that happened.

I saw that Butler County team play late in the 1974 season. Apollo was in its first year as a 4-year high school and had 6' 11" Tom Wendt in the middle. It was a good game but Butler County pulled out the victory over Apollo. It was a very nice nice Butler County team.
