nWo Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 I'm really watching the end of the upcoming week. Looks like we may really have something brewing for our area. It is really too early to predict anything we'll just have to wait and see how everything pans out. Here are the forcast sea level pressure and front maps for Thursday and Friday. Please take note of the predicted Low pressure systems to past just south of Kentucky. If they follow the this predicted track we could be in for some accumulating snow. Thursday Friday Now here are the experimental snow/ice forecast maps for the same time period. Please note that I've been watching this map closely this winter since its inception. This is the first time it has given this high of a probability of snow for Kentucky. Thursday Friday Saturday
nWo Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 Saturday evening update. First it is really early but we maybe facing our first winter storm of the season this upcoming week. We could also be looking at two shots of possible accumulating snow. Keep checking back as I'll be updating as we get closer.
swamprat Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 If it makes you feel any better, down here, we're under a tornado watch until 8 am. One hit Venice this afternoon. It took out Yummies Donuts & BBQ :(. High winds, heavy rain, and a lot of thunder & lightning, right now.

I was thinking earlier yesterday how it is much easier to predict severe thunderstorms than it is winter storms. Be safe.
nWo Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 Sunday morning update. As of now I'm centering my attention on the possible second chance of snow for us. The following maps will show the types of precipitation we might see around the end of the week. First on Thursday morning. Most of Kentucky south of I-64 could start out as rain. With possible snow chances for those north of I-64 and east of I-75. Then Thursday afternoon it should change over to all snow except around the Kentucky/Tennessee boarder. Thursday night it looks to change over to all snow. One concern I have it this holds true is the possibility of freezing rain/ice. Friday we may see a brief change over back to rain before it turns back to all snow. I will be posting updates whenever possible as we get closer. Thursday gridded forecast 12z/7am EST Thursday afternoon 18z/1pm Friday morning 12z/7am
TexasRanger Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Thx for the update I'll be traveling these day's. :(
nWo Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 Sunday evening update. This will be for Wednesday afternoon. Those in the area along the Ohio River from about Sturgis to Cincinnati and as far eastward as Lietchfield, Hodgenville, Springfield, Frankfort and Dry Ridge could be looking at 1-2" by Wednesday afternoon maybe more. I want to emphasize that this is very preliminary and will probably change as we get closer. Also This is just the start the rest of Kentucky could receive 1-2 by the first system ends on Thursday. Everyone really needs to pay attention the second system coming through on Friday. I'm not ready to predict anything for that system but I wouldn't be surprised to see our first winter storm advisory/watch of the season. I will post updates whenever possible as we get closer. If it looks like these model trends hold true I will more than likely go into a Winter Weather Threat Mode Tuesday evening or Wednesday Morning. This will be in a new thread. Keep check this thread as we go through the upcoming week. Probability of snow map Possible accumulation map
GaViking Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 nWo - Any word on traveling from Cincinnati to Greenville KY area Tuesday and Wednesday? I know Cincinnati is expecting 50% chance of snow Wednesday. Family members are trying to decide if they should leave Tuesday and get a hotel room.

I know Cincinnati is expecting 50% chance of snow Wednesday. Family members are trying to decide if they should leave Tuesday and get a hotel room. I would probably go up at least by Tuesday evening. I'm getting ready to do another update for Thursday and what I was worried about with my Sunday morning update is starting to show.
nWo Posted January 17, 2016 Author Posted January 17, 2016 2nd Sunday evening update As I mentioned in my Sunday morning update I was worried about the possibility of freezing rain or ice. Well it is now starting to show. South and east of the area I mentioned for the possibility of snow accumulation for Wednesday could see some freezing rain or ice Wednesday evening into Thursday. The area of most concern to me is Central Kentucky. This includes the following cities. Georgetown, Lexington, Paris, Winchester, Mt. Sterling, Richmond, Standford, Nicholasville, Standford, Liberty, Danville, Harrodsburg, Versailles. Anywhere between .001-.01" accumulation is possible. As always things could change so we need to start paying attention to see if this trend continues. If it does I will go into Winter Weather Threat Mode by Tuesday evening.
GaViking Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Thanks! Really appreciate your weather updates - always read your posts.
JDEaston Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Thanks for the updates @nWo. I know Thursday-Saturday is a long way off and a lot will change but the weather app on my phone is showing a significant event Thursday evening thru Saturday morning for the Ashland area. Not sure if that will hold up or not, but I'll be keeping an eye on your forecasts throughout the week for that time frame.
