1st Quarter 2016 Tax Revenues A Record

Featured Replies

CNS news reported that the 1st quarter of the 2016 fiscal year saw a record of $765,645,000,000 collected. Just think what it would be if it was not the slowest recovery in history. And it also makes one wonder why we still run a deficit. The Feds seem to be able to spend whatever is taken in and always needs more. Like a drunk at a casino, spends every dollar in cash, then runs up the credit cards and then mortgages the house leaving the family in debt for years to come.

Is that a function of more earnings? More people? I'm not an economist, so I don't know.

Since the Obama Administration argued that Obamacare premiums are a tax, that may have something to do with it. It is certainly not because we have more people working, since the labor participation rate is near all time lows and it is not because we are earning more since real income is down about $5000 per year for the middle class over the past 8 years.

The economy has grown some, but at a slow rate. It also has grown in spite of what Obama has done, trying to block more oil drilling, destroying coal jobs, more regulations, more welfare, both for US citizens and illegal aliens and his reckless spending.. His jobs programs were of limited use. By his own admission, there must not have been any 'shovel ready jobs'.

The Republicans are spending right along with the Dems so you can't really just blame the President for that.

I can agree that some Republicans like Boehner and McConnell went along with Obama. Bring on small government representatives.

Agreed...greedy pigs eating at the trough of the people...

If we took in twice what we did in the first fiscal quarter, the folks in Washington would find a way to easily spend more. I have said it before. If any private business owner played the same games with money that our government does, that owner would not only be bankrupt, he/she would be locked up for fraud and deception or SEC violations.

Does it matter at all that the cost of everything has gone up? Or is that just immaterial to fit the narrative?

Obama spends like a drunken sailor. No argument there. But Republicans do too. They just don't care to find ways to pay for their spending. The GOP narrative that Dems are irresponsible spenders is garbage, when you consider that at least Dems are willing to break from the Grover Norquist foolishness and raise taxes to pay for their largesse. Neither way is optimal, but be freakin' honest about reality.

Both parties are horrible spenders, and neither has a good plan to rein it in.

If income is increasing, but you still are going deeper in debt, you have a spending problem. Inflation has been low the last few years, so says the Feds. Some Republicans are also resposible for overspending. Bring in a new group of smaller government Congressmen. Reducing the size of government would be very helpful in reducing spending.

Zero debate that both parties have been partners in increasing the debt. They have no incentive for getting it under control. Blame that on the public though. One side wants lower taxes and the other side wants even more spending. Congress continues to give it's constituents what we want.

All true. But, the only plan that can rein it in is to cut spending...period.

Right while that means fewer social programs it also means no added defense spending. And most of all no tax cuts.

Everybody would be unhappy, but that is how compromise works.

And therein lies the rub.

TERM LIMITS. That way something constructive might get done.
