January 14, 201610 yr I tried, and obviously failed, to explain that when I made the statement above that it would be like titling a thread when Joe Morgan passes with the statement Houston Astro Joe Morgan has passed away. Yes Morgan played well for the Astros but the vast majority of the people recognize Morgan as a Cincinnati Red. The vast majority of the people recognize Rickman as Severus Snape more than they do as Hans Gruber.

January 14, 201610 yr As to which is more "popular", Die Hard grossed $138 million (Rickman only appeared in the first Die Hard movie). The "Harry Potter" series (Rickman was in all) grossed $7.7 Billion. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder (i.e. Ginger/Mary Ann).
January 14, 201610 yr I had no idea he was Snape as I've never seen a Harry Potter movie. As to being generational, i'm over 30 FWIW I knew he was Snape as I love the Harry Potter franchise, but when I think of Alan Rickman it's without question Die Hard, Robin Hood, and Love Actually all well before even thinking of Harry Potter. I'm under 30....for a little while longer at least.

I am sure many people thought of Mork when Robin Williams passed.
January 15, 201610 yr The world is a lesser place today. Rickman was a tremendous actor and talent. My wife wanted to watch the Deathly Hallows Part 2 as tribute (he has some fantastic stuff in that one). My suggestion of Die Hard was regrettably rebuffed.

One might argue — me for instance — that Die Hard is the greatest action flick ever. In that light, anything else he did pales in comparison. He was really good as Eamon DeValera in "Michael Collins," and he did a really good job as "The Voice" of God in "Dogma." I'm not going to entertain silly stuff just because he played in some low-rent kids' movie/book series. People in my office today started talking about it in Harry Potter terms and I nearly puked. I yelled out, "Hans Freakin' Gruber," to get the point across.
