If YOU Have Won A State Title, I'm Interested In Your Thoughts

Featured Replies

If it was before the 4 class change, do you feel that title is superior to those that won after the change? If it was after the move to 4 classes, do you think your hard work is lessened because of the additional class? Thanks in advance...

I won a state championship in class A and I think the higher classes state championship were worth more. 6 classes will just make more disparity between Class A and Class A^6 state championships. When I played they started the 5A Louisville class, mainly to get rid of the big Louisville schools so other teams could get a 4A championship. It was a bad idea then, just as this 6 class deal is a bad idea now.

So because you grew up in a small community, you don't really consider yourself a champion???

For me additional classes do not diminish a title

A 4A state champ has been beaten by a 2A school before which also gave me reason to feel that we could play with and maybe win against a larger class champion

For me I think once a champ always a champ. I will always look back and think we had an extremly difficult (probably one of the toughest in the state) road to win it all. I think if you look at the 1A schools in the 6 class system they won't play the calliber teams we did to win it but you have to look at the big picture. The structure and numbers of those small schools against teams of the same makeup make their championshp road tough for them unless they are getting transfers in or something like that. The first couple of rounds will be a cakewalk for some schools but from the Regional Championship on things are usually pretty even.

When I was a JR Mayfield beat us by 3 in the final 4. We had beaten schools like Mason Co, Russell etc. Had we one it then I could care less about what we would have done against a 4A school. We had the talent to play with Mayfield/Danville etc but probably would have gotten thumped by Trinity back then. Had we beaten Mayfield/Danville then I don't think our championship would have been tarnished one bit.

 What? Do your former teammates know that you place more value on the larger schools that won championships that year then the one you were so fortunate to be a part of? I'll let them know..;):D

Maybe hes not living in the past like some people do. Are you supposed to put "State Champ" on your resume?

Are you supposed to put "State Champ" on your resume?

I think you'd be rather foolish not to...

Winning a state championship is a HUGE accomplishment and I don't care what sport it is. I am not saying list it on your resume but definitely something to be proud of. Whats wrong with living in the past? I find it enjoyable to get together with buddies from the past and BS about sports and knock back some pops. Talking about the past, not living in the past.

GRC won the 4A title in 1991...beating Trinity and St X . Change of classes didn't make a difference as GRC will be in the class with the "Big Dogs".

Some of these people make it sound like you should build your life around it. I don't have a championship ring, but I would think its a nice memory to have. But a couple years later, how many people really care if you were a state champ?

I will give you that.... there are some folks out there that are in their 40's and you would think they just walked off the field and were handed the trophy. That does irk me but if you can be modest about the accomplishment.... then it is HUGE.

 What are you even talking about? Maybe you should reread the thread and see what HHSDad and I were discussing and then you might have some sort of educated comment to make on the topic.:D As for his resume I could really care less what he has on it but if he did want to put State Champ on it he by all means has earned that right which is something a great many of us can never say..:p

You go to 6:30 A.M. weights 3 days a week, fly by yourself to Minn, Dallas etc, drive to Chicago, South Bend etc alone all to learn more about the game, spend 36 straight days away from your family breaking down film including Sundays from 12:30-9:00, chase the goal for 15 years, work with new programs that have never had a team and get your brains beat in, deal with foolish parents, get paid an average of about $1 an hour for the time you put in, be a part of some of the biggest wins in state history only to not win it all etc etc then finally win it all....... I promise you that you will care the rest of your life that you are a champion for the dues that you have paid! For some it's not a matter of what anybody else thinks, it's knowing that the drive/commitment/sacrifice you've made and the persistance to achieve your long term goal finally paying off that matters the most.
