The law was there due to an Ashland worker overhearing something in the locker room along the lines of "We might have to get the cops". They were never told to be called. Now, I'm not defending Mullins and saying he did nothing wrong, but it's not as bad as what people who weren't there or know anything close to it, say it was. And as far as I know, Mullins will not be back on the team.

 

Haven't you realized EVERYONE around here knows what they are talking about? Even though they didn't hear the FACTS from someone on the coaching staff. Kid has serious anger issues and lost his cool. That's about it.

 

What isn't mentioned is that since going to Newport he has his highest GPA ever and has been a GREAT student off the court with no disciplinary issues.

Noe isn't a football player anymore...all hoops. He IS their best shooter...I was just questioning why you wouldn't have him in shooting when the O struggles to score. I think that's fair. As for saying the team not having many kids who can shoot, the FT % is an example. As for players not shooting for whatever reason, I would assume it's lack of confidence...which equates to poor shooting. And the ones who do shoot are only taking one bad shot after another? I do agree with that to a point, but they can't all be bad shots...regardless, they still are missing a lot more than they make. The stats don't lie. It doesn't take away anything from the athletes!!! I love their effort!! I don't think there is anything wrong with football players first busting their butts for the school and team...it's just a fact that for the most part, when the vast majority of time is put into football, and secondarily, after football you pick a basketball...the skills just aren't going to be there.

 

So was Noe not on the football team this past season? There are obviously reasons the kid is not playing, but that is the coaches decision and I will leave it at that because I am not going to try and drag any kid in the program down.

In all seriousness though do they need to run more offense and limit shots to really really good ones or is it a matter of having guys that can shoot that are not making shots.

It certainly does but actually my Son asked that I enjoy the year as for most they only have 4 folks. Applaud effort and team and the rest will take care of itself. A nice lesson a boy taught a Dad.

Anyone want to talk about the Highlands JV coach blow up after Newport hit a 3 at the buzzer to win the JV game and what happened after or what was said to the Newport Assistant Principal?

 

Or the fact that the officiating was so terrible that Hollis fouled out and Davis was in foul trouble the majority of the game?

 

What happened on the play where a Birds player blatantly pushed Covington's head in to the ground on a loose ball. Watch the film then get back to me on that one. You'll be surprised to know that this was prior to Covington supposedly taking cheap shots at Birds players.

 

Would also like to get feedback on the no call where a ball was thrown in Hollis face and refs took off sprinting because they saw it but no T was called.

 

The funny thing is, if anyone knew these Newport kids off the court they would probably label them as "soft" but yet some on here feel the need to give them a reputation that is no where close to what these KIDS represent.

It's beyond me how you can seriously complain about officials when your HS varsity team scores 36 points. The officials may have made some bad calls that had impact on the game, but ALL calls impact the game, good or bad. Just as the whistles against Newport impacted them. That said, if Highlands hits more shots, or turns the ball over less, they win because their defense played so well. Unreal to blame officials here.

 

This said, I have no dog in the fight, and could care less who won this game, both seemed to play hard. But, why is it that every thread that involves Highlands... Those who support Highlands complain and point fingers, and those who don't support Highlands bash them and talk about how "whatever" they are.

Take your blinders off there son. Perhaps you should get your stories straight before you get on here and spout off as if you know everything that happens in NKY and no one else does. I know what I saw and I stand by what I said, period end of story. You can try to sugar coat things however you like, but it is what it is.

Highlands came out in their usual fashion of rushing things and allowed Newport to get out to an early 8 to 10 point lead. Then in the 2nd quarter they started to ramp up the defensive pressure a little by forcing the ball out of Snapp's hands and Newport then struggled to score. Birds down 4 at break and have a drive to basket with about 4 seconds on clock and Dougherty is hammered on drive and bald headed official swallows his whistle. 3rd quarter is when things really get interesting as referees are appearing to be intimidated by the atmosphere as Covington has been hitting guys for 2 plus quarters with various cheap shots and nothing is called. There is then a loose ball on the floor and he decides to take a cheap shot at Dougherty and spineless official calls an intentional foul on Dougherty after he shoves Covington who gets away with another [rough] play. This little sequence inspires the Birds who rally to tie the game at 28 all in the early 4th quarter. Neither team can convert baskets or free thrown attempts and then Newport opens a 4 point lead only to see Highlands Cain drive to the basket for a score and then the "play of the night". Finfrock called for goaltending on a shot that is 3/4's of the way in the basket and appears to grab the net for fear of getting his feet taken out from under him by someone that was fouling him.

 

To say the officials had a big impact on this game would be nothing but the truth. Both teams played hard and Newport tried their usual thuggery tactics, but this Birds team did not and will not back down. I said it earlier in the year that they will play hard and defense will create offense. Newport knows that they were in a game last night and that Highlands can certainly get them in the district tourney.

 

On a side note, I truly believe that the referee's are looking for any little thing with this Highlands team because there are so many footballers playing. They are starting to get a little bit of a reputation which is bull. Their defensive style has been used by many of the top teams over the last several years and no one was saying anything to them, but every time something gets a little physical with this Birds team the officials are quick to talk to them and nothing is said to the other team.

Who called anyone a thug? That is a noun is it not? The word was thuggery. You may choose another word, but it was pretty obvious that things are/were done with the intent of trying to "intimidate" and it did not work I guess now did it?
