I was told today by a friend, who may or may not know what they are talking about, that Nate McPeek turned down this job. Can anyone confirm this?

 

How far down on Bell County's wish list are they now? How many coaches have either turned it down or just declined interest all together? Is it safe to say that McPeek was at least the 10th?

 

Assuming this was true, it is very telling. McPeek must be really wanting to get back to KY judging by the fact that his name has been rumored for every opening in the Commonwealth. A source on here who has claimed to be close to him has promoted him for several of those jobs in various threads. He applied for this job and interviewed at least once. And then turned them down.

 

On the other side, you have Bell Co who really needs to make a hire. So here is a coach with a checkered past, who left KY after an embarrassing investigation into wrongdoing by the team he was in charge of, who a lot of schools are afraid of because of the past. Bell County, despite all that, after really going down the list of coaches decides to take a chance on McPeek and makes him an offer, and he turns it down.

 

Things must be really bad in Bell County.

This would scare any prospective head coach:

 

1. No assts.

2. No job safety. (They just fired a winning coach).

 

If you are packing up your family to move to Eastern KY, you dang well better know you will have job and some help once you get there.

Has Bell Co said the new coach can't have assistant coaches? That can't be true and if it is they might as well just give up the sport.

With all the problems the school seems to be having and the seeming lack of interest in the football program, will we see Bell County kids moving to Pineville and/or Middlesboro?

Heard the same thing. I'm sure they'll land somebody, but that whole situation seems like a disaster at this point.

What could they be doing differently? I'm not defending them, but I've seen so many people complain about the group doing the hiring just simply because people have turned the job down, it seems. They can't make someone make the hire.

 

It's fine if you want to blame the administration for the lack of funds, lack of coaches or lack of support. But, you can't blame them because someone turned down a job with minimal athletes in a region with a shrinking population.

 

It seems to me that they're trying to hire for a position that is a hard sell to just about everyone remotely qualified. Whether that situation is their own fault or the fault of others, or is just something that has happened without much control, is purely debatable.

 

Again, I'm not trying to defend anyone or attack anyone. I'm just confused what everyone wants in this situation. A homerun hire of a legendary coach? Not happening. Sorry. Dudley? Still not happening. Someone who is completely devoted to Bell County football who is a qualified coach? Beats me, I don't know who is there who would fit that mold.

Who is the athletic director? What role does he/she have in this? Are any other sports at Bell expecting to suffer as much as football seems primed for?

The AD has no clue about athletics at all. He just has the position because he best buddy is the principal.
