Please! Central and Lex Cath beat BC and you're they have the better chance?

I can't speak on every team in the west from 3A, bit I can speak on Elizabethtown, Central and Boyle County. LexCath did not get it done in the trenches and it ultimately cost us on Sunday. I think the score would've been different had Boyle County or Central got a shot at them. I still think Belfry was the best overall team LexCath faced, but I do believe Boyle County and Central would've put up a better fight in the trenches. If you can make Belfry punt or maybe turn it over the scoring margin will decrease. Their first 5 drives resulted in rushing TDS against the Knights. The only shot LC had was a shootout, that simply did not happen. I think Central having more familiarity with the Pirates would make them the best matchup as far as scoring margin. I think Boyle would make them work as well and they would be number 2. Elizabethtown would be 3.

 

This is just from the 3A west teams I saw LexCath play, so I'm only judging those teams.

LexCath killed Boyle with big plays but couldn't run the ball on us...neither could other teams.

I don't even know what you're arguing about.

Central would've been the best matchup against Belfry. Boyle would have put up a better game than Lex Cath but still wouldn't have been able to hang for the full 4 quarters. I say Central would've been within 7-14. Boyle within 14-28. Regardless Belfry would've won the title no matter the opponent in 3A.

Saying one team would match up better than another isn't a knock on a program. Obviously Catholic was better than Boyle and Central and Elizabethtown - they've got the wins to prove it. And nobody is arguing otherwise. But that doesn't necessarily mean they were a better matchup for a particular game.

For the record, and to illustrate the point of matchups, I thought both Corbin and Lawrence County played Belfry more competitively than LexCath.

 

If LexCath played either team I would expect the Knights to win.

 

Corbin is the only team in maybe the past 5 years to sustain "success" against Belfry in the playoffs by running the ball. Lawrence County was considerably more effective hitting pass plays against the Pirates. With that said, I would probably take LexCath over Corbin by 1-2 TD's and over Lawrence by 3-4 TD's.

I stayed out of the prediction thread because it seemed clear that to stay with Belfry the Knights would need to match them mostly score-for-score. The defense was not going be able to 'shut-down' the Pirates at all - that was for sure. Slowing them down and getting a couple of stops was a best case senario.

 

The Knight offense failed to get off the launching pad. 117 yards, 5 first downs. Those may be program lows. But unlike the Highlands semi when running clocked kicked in 2 years ago the offense did not directly self-destruct with turnovers. Zero turnovers for this game vs two early two years ago. Just no spark - and thas can be attributed to a strong defense.

 

Credit the Belfry defense and pre-game study. They smothered at least 3 bubble screens that were always used early in games by the Knights. They covered the primary wideouts tight and well to take away the long ball. And they stopped Jaylen Jones up the middle running and swarmed on Andy Thompson on QB draws. No doubt this was best prepared defense to face the Knights for sure and they combined the size and quickness.

 

Maybe different plays would have worked better but you never know. The Knights did have some success with motion plays and did try to go to the 2nd tier receivers underneath a few times. But without some early scoring things were already bleak by early 2nd quarter. Most fans knew it.

 

Without at least 28 to 35 points on the board the Knights were not going to win this one.

 

As far as different match-up that would have looked better on scoreboard. Probably Boyle. Maybe E-town for 1 and 1/2 quarters maybe with their power running game. But E-town played 7 players both ways - the wear down-factor would have kicked in at some point. Central felt like looking into a mirror - good atheletes, speed, quickness but not overwhelming in size.

 

PS - anyone have TOP for the game? I bet it favors Belfry by at least 2 to 1.
