Kirby Smart to Georgia

Featured Replies

Alabama DC Kirby Smart is the new head man at Georgia. Alabama is expected to target Gerogia DC to replace Smart.

You don't fire Richt unless you have a very good plan in place. I would say UGA new they had Smart on the hook before they fired Richt.

Great coach, but is he any better than Richt? I don't think so. He definitely isn't worse, but he isn't better either. Not really a drastic change IMO, but I'm sure the Georgia people love it.

^Not sure how you can say that before he's ever coached a single game....

Thats exactly why I said that, honestly. You get rid of Richt, to bring in a guy who hasn't coached before. Certainly he has the pedigree after being at Alabama, and learning under Saban, but if Georgia is the program they say they are they could have gotten someone with more head coaching experience like a Briles or a Patterson. I just don't see Georgia being National Title Contenders anytime soon. I think any school that can lure Briles away from Baylor (and I certainly consider Georgia a school that could) they are national contenders from day 1. Just my 2 cents.

Very few examples of an inexperienced coach stepping in to a top 15 job and dominating over the past 10 years or so. When they have had success, they've been part of building the program in a major leadership role, such as Chip Kelly or Jimbo Fisher.

Lack of HC experience has not worked out for most that walk into the really good jobs. Hard to learn the ropes when you're expected to win it all immediately. That's why I dislike the USC and UGA hires. They may work out, but why not try to get the for sure thing?

I read someone on Twitter who speculates WKU may lose their OC to UGA now.

Would be a great hire IMO. WKU was able to put points up on LSU with far inferior talent, so the offense ran at Western has shown that it can be effective at the SEC level. Not sure Nick Chubb is going to like this offense too much, but when you have player like him, you find ways to get him the ball no matter the offense.

This could be a great hire. However if I am a top program, I would want to hire someone who has gotten it done at a top school and also has some head coaching experience. Houstons coach would be my main target. He has gotten it done at a top program as a coordinator and even in just one year has shown he can win as a Head coach too.

I love Tom Hermann don't get me wrong. I think he is the best young coach in America. But if I'm Georgia I want someone who has won in a power 5 conference already. There is not a doubt in my mind that Tom Hermann gets a Power 5 job this year, but he isn't qualified for Georgia just yet IMO.

That is the thing Kirby Smart hasn't won in a power conference as a Head coach. He basically has done what Herman did and won as a coordinator. Herman however now also has a year experience running a program and also won while doing it.

With Smart he reminds me kind of, of the defensive coordinator now for Auburn who was the head coach at Florida. One of the top defensive coaches that was winning at a top 5 school and everyone wanted him. However when he got his head coaching job he didn't do well at all. Not saying that will happen with Smart. However even just the one year by Hermann he got to experience running a program and did a great job at it. So just for me i would have went after him.

I would have definitely went after Hermann before Smart, IMO. But there are others I would want before him at this time. If Georgia is what they think they are they pay whatever they want for Art Briles, Gary Patterson, Dan Mullen, someone of this caliber. Who knows maybe Kirby Smart wins big at Georgia, but its still a question to me. I don't think there are any questions about the other guys.

I don't get it. Georgia would have been THE JOB this offseason now that USC is filled. Why sign an unknown?
