November 10, 201510 yr Looks like all that practice during the CovCath football game really paid off! Congratulations to Mr. Craig - Director of Bands and his students! Beechwood Marching Band wins championship FORT MITCHELL – Being a state championship winning marching band doesn’t come easy. “Band is a lot of fun, but it’s hard work, too,” Beechwood High School student and drum major Takashi Yoko Kura said. “It can be stressful. We practice a lot and a long time on Saturdays we spend all day practicing. It’s an immense amount of stress but we do it anyway because it’s worth it.” Yoko Kura and his fellow 91 bandmates’ hard work has paid off. They recently won the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) State Marching Band Championships for the Class A division. The competition took place on Oct. 31 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. The event is the culminating performance for more than 8,500 students from 110 high school bands from 80 of Kentucky's 120 counties. This is the band’s seventh championship win, said Director of Bands Joe Craig. He credits the students for the success. “It starts and ends with the students,” he said. “We are student-driven. We have an amazing group of super, hard-working kids. I enjoy most their passion. They work so hard, they practice on their own and they help each other. They’re very committed to being excellent and they push me to be better too.” Craig says it feels fantastic to bring home the state championship trophy. “It’s a huge honor,” he said. Yoko Kura said it was a chance for redemption. “We didn’t win the championship last year, but this year we came through. We really worked hard and made some changes to improve what we’re doing. This proves that we are doing better than last year.” Yoko Kura, who has been in the marching band for five years, is reminded of a saying he’s been told: “You can’t do anything without going through pain.” That is certainly the case with band, he said. “Without all the hard work and even the stress, it wouldn’t be as rewarding in the end,” Yoko Kura said. The hard work continues as the band now prepares for the Bands of American Grand National Championships that begin on Thursday, Nov. 12, in Indianapolis. They won the Class A division for this competition in 2006 and 2011.

November 10, 201510 yr Congrats to Beechwood. Their band (much like their football team) is always good. Love seeing the band kids get recognition. Very few people know how hard those folks work.
November 10, 201510 yr Congrats Beechwood. The band has always been kicktail at Beechwood. Tons and tons of practice.
November 10, 201510 yr 91 members in ANY band today is HUGE but from a 1A school is simply unheard of. I have never been afraid to say that I thought the band worked longer and harder than football teams when I was in high school. They'd be there in the morning, be there when I left after the first practice, and be there when I got back for the 2nd practice - on the hot blacktop. Kids work hard. Kudos.

I agree the Band put in more time than the football team when I was in high school and it wasn't even close.
November 10, 201510 yr This is kind of a funny story. American Pie Bandcamp (straight to video) was written by a Lloyd graduate. The story centers around two rival bands, Beechwood and Lloyd bands. They use the Beechwood name and their colors. On a side note, there are 2 characters in the movie named after my best friend and me. The guy who wrote the script was a Freshman when I was a Senior, but I do not know him.
