There's a lot in here (including some coarse language and a lot of political talk pulled in)...but this segment does a great job of covering how much prescription painkillers are involved in the heroin epidemic.

 

With 90% of the world's poppy being grown in Afghanistan, sure Mexico is an issue like some are suggesting, but isn't it obviously a bigger issue that a ton of it, and probably most of it is coming from where the the majority of it is grown?

Isn't cancer natural selection? And diabetes? And essentially every other treatable disease? Isn't any and all kind of medical treatment an interference by mankind in the process of natural selection?

Drug addiction is self imposed. Not even in the same ballpark. It's a choice, you choose, you die. Don't start doing heroin, dont become addicted to heroin. You'll never drown if you don't go swimming. Make any sense?

Do yourself a favor and Google "list of opioid pain killers" and educate yourself on what they are, and how highly addictive they can be. Ever taken codeine cough syrup? Then you've personally ingested an opioid. Anyone in your family ever had major surgery and been prescribed Vicodin or OxyContin? Welp, then you'd better kick them out of your highly exclusive inner circle...because those are opioid pain killers.

There are no DRUG ADDICTS in my (exclusive) as you put it inner circle. I could care less what someone does to theirselves. I'm just not about running to save someone of their own choices and decisions. It is not societies problem they chose to do drugs or mine. My exclusive inner circle consists of my kids and close friends of character. It's exclusive as you again put it because I actually care ABOUT the influences around my kids. When you choose to use, you lose the ability to be my life. I've gone my entire life and not used illegal drugs because I chose not to. It's not that hard. I'm not going to justify anyones idiotic decisions as you are trying to do. Life is full of decisions and you should take care to choose wisely or be a fool. Not my job to save you. My advise just say no. Drug addicts are a drain on everyone. No sympathy for them when they know what they are doing might kill them. They risk their life to get high, so they know the consequences.

I know a guy that's been struggling for almost 10 years now. It's starting to feel a little grim.

 

 

As far as stopping the problem, I'd want to focus on limiting the number of people who are new users. People who are already addicted aren't quitting, at least not in large numbers.

As someone who has lost two friends because they got into heroin after becoming addicted to doctor prescribed oxycontin given as pain management to follow surgeries for high school sports injuries....I sincerely hope your kids don't ever get injured in sports, FtN. It's so much more of a complicated issue than "just saying no", and to say otherwise does show that you don't understand the full breadth of the issue.

The heroin addicts I see are not athletes treating a sports injury. They are lifelong drug abusers who are just chasing the next high. While there are situations of people being addicted to narcotics via legitimate reasons, the majority of addicts are not accidental victims. They made concious choice to partake in the scene. Now it has consumed them. They saw what it does to others but wanted to do drugs anyway. The number of people who become addicted by legitimate health reasons compared to the recreational drug user who progresses the the next drug is small in comparison. I grew up in the hood, seen and knew a whole lot of drug users and dealers. I've seen a whole lot more than most of you from better areas so I don't need the I don't know lecture. Have I taken a formal drug addiction course at college and claim to have a degree in addiction, nope. I have plenty of life experience to teach me what I need to know. Yes I have family members who are addicted to drugs. They were using as teens and it was a choice that led to their addiction. Not pain meds prescribed by a doctor. I'll get the call that so and so has od and died someday. I'll go pay my respects but won't shed a tear. Their urge to escape life is stronger than the urge to live it. There is no amount of phsycobable that can cure someone who doesnt want to be cured. I've seen addicts rip families apart and terrorize everyone they come in contact with ruining more than just their own lives. So I say emphatically, if you use you will be no where around me. Not my cup of tea, not my type of people, not my problem. There are plenty of people going through things in which they are truly innocent victims of. My heart and help goes out to them. Not wasting time on addicts.
