November 3, 201510 yr How do NAIA teams like Cumberland, Campbellsville, Lindsey Wilson, Georgetown, etc. compare with DIII teams like Wittenberg, Depaw, Dennison, etc.? Also where how would Centre and Thomas More compare? It is interesting to me that none of the KY DIII or NAIA schools play any of the many OH DIII schools. Not sure why that is given the proximity between the two.
November 3, 201510 yr There is such a HUGE gulf in talent and quality at the DIII level. Georgetown and teams in their conference would own Centre's conference and Thomas More's. They would be more evenly matched with the Wisconsin-Whitewaters and Mount Unions. There are only, really, 8 NAIA level teams in DIII. DII is a better comparison.

The only local team that they could schedule that is within 21 points for Mt. Union is Franklin, and that was with one good QB. I don't know how they are doing this year. Wittenburg is traditionally good, but TMC would give them a game. I don't know much about Centre, but I believe that Wabash is perennially the team to beat in that conference. This was 16 years ago, so take it for what it is worth, but I don't think that it has changed too much. In '99, we (Hanover) were #5 in the country heading into our playoff game. We were at home against the Ohio Athletic Conference runner-up, and at-large team, Ohio Northern. We had a 31 game home winning streak. We wound up losing by 40 to the RUNNER-UP. The very next week, Wittenburg hosted them. Same margin of victory for ONU. They then travelled to Mt. Union and lost by 35. You don't want to compare scores, but you can compare those scores.

Good stuff Mex. How about I throw one more group of teams into the mix. Where do you think non-scholarship D-1 would be in the mix (Morehead, Dayton, Valpo., etc.)?
November 3, 201510 yr Still true that most NAIA schools are offering some type of grant in aid while d3 does not? D2 offers limited grant in aid.

I'm not really sure. I know that they were better than we were at Hanover. I don't know by how much. I'm guessing much more. Somebody like Bardo is a Gagliaridi award finalist if he goes to a DIII school. At Dayton, he was good, but I don't believe that he made 1st team All Conference. That would be my best gauge, though small in scope.
November 3, 201510 yr I think NAIA is more comparable to D2 than D3. The elite D2 teams are better overall than the NAIA teams, but the top half of NAIA could compete very well with a D2 schedule. D3 only has about 6-8 teams that could compete at this mentioned level

He was first team preseason in his last year but was honorable mention when the year ended. He did, however, make the FCS Athletic Directors' All-Academic team. The defense failed him in a couple games last year. If he'd had a real shot at San Diego, he might have made first team.
November 3, 201510 yr I believe the D1 non scholarship teams are comparable to a good D3 team. That would make sense given the restrictions and limitations both levels face in terms of recruitment.
