Your original post did not specify Div 1. The remaining 6 divisions only qualify the top eight with the top 4 of each division hosting an opening round home game.

If it is the way it used to be. Teams are part of a conference, so 6-7 of your games are decided for you. You must then find 3-4 quality opponents to get you to the playoffs.

 

My old high school is Division III region 8.

 

There are four regions in division III (7,8,9,&10).

 

They each have 26 or 27 schools.

 

The top 8 teams from each region make the playoffs, with 1-4 hosting the first round and the next two rounds at neutral sites.

 

The 4 regional champions are reseeded for semi final.

 

Then there is a championship.

 

Less than 1/3 of the schools in the state make the playoffs. You really have to earn it.

 

Conference schedule keeps you from scheduling all cupcakes.

 

Conferences are regional and not every team is in the same division. For example the Sandusky Bay Conference has 7 teams in 3 different divisions. Currently they have 4 teams in the top 8 in their respective divisions and one sitting at 9. It is a very good conference.

If Elder wins Friday they will most likely make the playoffs and be top 16 in their region. That would mean every GLC school Moeller played made the playoffs. Add in Indy power Cathedral, St Ignatius and St Ed's from Cleveland, Don Bosco Prep from NJ, Dayton Wayne, and Xenia (playoff team) and you've got killer of a schedule.

That's not playing around! Injuries can really hurt a team, but with a schedule like that it will bury you!

I like it. You have to earn the right to get in, so much better than 0-10, 1-9-2-8 or 3-7 teams getting in.

I don't really like some computer ranking being the only factor but I certainly agree that our KY. System puts too many teams (practically all teams in state) in the post season. I never have liked the rewarding failure or mediocrity theory.

I think the Harbin system is intriguing. Last year in D1 Region 2 (Southern Ohio) top seed Centerville lost in the 1st round to Lakota West so it takes some of those 1st round advantages away. Not a big fan of the computers, but with over 700 schools playing football in Ohio, what else do you do?

Let's compare guys:

Ky has 6 classes, 32 teams in each class make the playoffs.. total playoff - 192

1A-33 teams, 2A - 37, 3A - 41, 4A - 40, 5A - 38, 6A - 32 total teams 221

So you have 192 of the 221 teams making KY playoffs = 87%

 

Ohio has 7 Divisions, like KY- 32 teams in each Division make the playoff.

D1 is 2 regions, 16 teams in each region make playoffs = 32 total D1

D2 thru D7, has 4 regions in each division, with 8 teams in ea. region making the playoffs, again 32 teams total per Division.

In Ohio you have 224 teams out of 717 teams making the playoffs 31.2%

 

Computers are computers but let's take Moeller, who will probably not make the playoffs. Does anyone really believe that there are 16 teams in Ohio's D1, Region 2 better than Moeller??? Absolutely Not.

 

Living in Northern Ky, I can see a striking difference between the way Ohio and Kentucky run their HS football playoffs. I have said for years, Ky has too many Classes in football for such a few number of teams. Probably 4 classes should be the max IMO. Hard to believe 0-10, 1-9 teams can make playoffs in Ky. Everyone in Kentucky's 6A makes the playoffs; and all but 1 team make the 1A playoffs.
