I've never liked the idea of computer rankings. May as well just let the computer play the games itself and tell you who won the championship.

Sounds like something I don't like. Calculated rankings are garbage IMO, especially if it is the deciding factor as to whether you make the playoffs or not.

I haven't studied up on the Ohio system, but most of the computer rankings I've seen are over complicated and give said team a lot of credit for destroying a terrible district team, but no credit for beating an out of state team that may be better than anyone else said team plays.

The Harbin rankings have been explained on this site before several times. It is not a computer rating like I said. It adds up your wins and wins of opponents that you beat. Like a calculator.

Um, Ohio St. X needs to beat Kentucky St. X to get in the playoffs, so it's clear out-of-state wins matter ... at least in Ohio.

 

If out-of-state (for Ohio) did NOT matter, Cincy St. X would have dropped Louisville St. X a long time ago.

 

As far as the computer rankings you've seen -- I'm assuming the Courier-Journal Litkenhous (LIT) rankings and the Herald-Leader Cantrall rankings -- it's because a local person (CJ, LHL) isn't going to take the time to figure out the opponents' opponents part of the equation. Thus, it's dropped.

 

Now, Calpreps/MaxPreps DOES include out-of-state wins, mainly because it ranks nationally.

 

FWIW, Kentucky's playoff tiebreaker (for teams which finish in a three-way tie in district) does include part of the "Harbin" system that Ohio uses (total wins of teams you've beaten).

That's overly confusing at first glance, I'll look at it more when I have time. But a couple of quick questions, since you seem familiar with this.

 

If an opponent of yours doesn not get to play a full schedule, for whatever reason, you receive a deduction?

 

Also I see the point system for the Ohio classes. But what happens when they play an out of state team? Are they not awarded any points for that win? If they are, what is the point scale based on, since all states do things differently.

 

Again, I'm not fimiliar with this system and just glanced over it, I'm semi occupied at the moment. But at first glance it looks like it may have some of the same problems as most computer rankings.

Understood. So how do they award points for out of state games then? How many points will cincy St x get if they beat Louisville St x?
