Can the 3A champ come from outside the Big 3?

Keep Sleeping folks. Keep sleeping. Your dream just might become a tiger nightmare. This year's 3A is absolutely LOADED in the west. Sad that some of these great teams will have early exits while Belfry gets a cakewalk, and will have to win only ONE game against quality competition to win a state title. Even then, Belfry comes up that one win short. IMO

The problem with Caldwell is that the last two years we've been expecting a deep run and they've come up short against Murray and DeSales, teams that pound the ball and take time off the clock. I can foresee the same difficulties with teams like Boyle or Central this season. I'm not saying Caldwell can't win, but I've found myself reluctant to buy in just because of past experiences. I actually hope I'm wrong.

Valid enough point

Upsets do happen, but when 12 of the 16 teams who have played for the 3A Title since the 6 Class System in 2007 have been named Belfry or Central it is also hard to ignore history.

I don't want anybody thinking I'm saying they will.....cause I don't. I just thought somebody saying the thought of it was crazy, didn't seem true. I agree with you.

The thing with Louisville Central is they can milk the clock on you (pound the rock). They don't mind 10-20 play drives (although they DO have big-play ability).

And if they get up on you, their defense is good enough to force you to nickel-and-dime them. Nickel-and-dime is NOT Caldwell's mode of operation.

To put it in baseball terms: You CAN'T hit home runs against Central's and Boyle's defense.

You have to hope to get on base and play small ball and work your way around the bases. Sacrifice, hit-and-run, bunt, suicide, squeeze, whatever.

Caldwell swings for the fences. Which works great against many people. Not against Cy Young defenses, though.

I couldn't agree more with your statement. I feel EXACTLY the same way. A loss to Murray last year is still a sore spot in a game that I feel Caldwell wins handily with Sindelar. The loss to DeSales was demoralizing the season before. There is a HUGE difference in this version of Caldwell. This team puts together drives and is no where near as dependent on the huge plays of the past few years. The defense is much improved over the last few seasons. This is a TEAM, and they play like one. The dependence on ONE PLAYER is over. I am not saying, by any means, that Caldwell is a title favorite. I feel Boyle is head and shoulders above the field. Then there is a group of Central, LexCath, Caldwell, PT, Belfry. Wouldn't it be sweet to see a playoff with all these teams.

Caldwell lost to Murray the last 2 years. We have never lost to DeSales

This is the best Caldwell team Barnes has had including the Sindelar years but will be a great task getting to the finals. The advantage they might have is playing at home. That big Tiger overlooking the field is a daunting sight. Of course they have a chance and will be a tough out. E-Town and Adair have played very weak schedules and have no chance getting to the semi's let along the final. I think the 3 seed from region one will beat the loser of their game this week in the first round. Central always has to be in the mix for a state championship.

You are correct. The only time Caldwell played DeSales was in 2012, and they won that game in semis.

All I know is that whoever draws Waggener in the first round is not going to be happy with that match up. I heard that both Harper Brothers from Trinity were ruled eligible to play this week. They are a team that has the potential to beat anyone, I just don't know if they can pull it together fast enough. Will be fun to watch over the next 3 weeks and see what they accomplish heading into the playoffs.

How many new transfers will that make for Waggener for this year? 5? Good for them. Either you have play makers or you don't.

This years Caldwell team is 10 points better than last years team. But I am taking the big 3. You can have the field.

I think anything is possible Laurence County almost knocked of Belfry. You just never know. Fleming County beat Russell in a game where no one picked them. They played a perfect game and Russell could not respond in the mud. I although don't think that Boyle County will be beat. But you never know.

I'll take the big three, and I do look for the state champ to come out of the west.
