10K Decrease In Number of High School Kids Playing Football

I think that goes both ways. Some kids would rather play one night a week. Seems like a natural shift considering the horrible press football is getting right now.

2 kids have died within the last couple of weeks playing football. Is that the horrible press you reference?

No I was talking about CTE and the impending lawsuits from older players with plastic helmets and zero concern for concussions.

I saw the story on one of the players who died due to a heart condition which could happen in a game of golf.

The other I didn't see and can't speak to that.

Gotcha.

Do you have an issue with the news reporting the CTE lawsuits and findings?

Has anyone found the numbers of players for 13'-14' and 14'-15'?

In 2011-2012 school year there were 1,097,597 high school football players.

In 2012-2013 school year there were 1,088,158 high school football players.

That was an 0.86% drop in participation.

The 10,000 player drop in 2014-2015 would be slightly higher - about 0.93%

Nope. TBH I believe it's done some good things for the game and will increase its staying power in the long run. Coaches at all levels are forced to worry about a player's safety not just production.

Along with that football will be a numbers game. Ironman football equals concussions and injuries that players will not be forced to play through. So to remedy it I can see more players on the field.

meanwhile 10k increase in Lacrosse. (joking)

I can say when I was AD we had a serious drop in our football numbers to the point that we were only dressing 40-50 players at a 6A sized school, but the club lacrosse team had 40+ kids (many of which had played football @ the high school at one time) & had quit to play that club sport.

I'll bet anything it has to do with kids being lazy and not wanting to put down that Xbox controller. It probably has something to do with kids being scared too, but xbox games are killing kids.

I don't buy this argument at all. I'd say athletes work harder than ever now. Video games have been around for nearly 40 years....I had a video game system in 1980. What I didn't have was access to elite, year round training programs designed to make me bigger faster and stronger. And I'd say all the select sports teams, and requirements to participate in year round sports activities is what's driving kids away from football. Its a tough sell for a kid who's really good at another sport but only an ok football player. In the past, it was much easier for the marginal kid to play. Now, it's impossible, especially if he plays another sport. There are other sports that give an immediate return, or they can spend that time working a job and making money.

From '14 to '15

Football - down about 10k

Baseball - up about 4k

Basketball - down about 4k

Golf - down about 3k

Lacrosse - up about 5k

Soccer - up about 17k

Fastpitch - even

Since you are throwing out stats, do you have market share numbers? What is the size of total participation of all sports? How many play multiple sports?

I know it's not a soccer bashing thread, so I'm not going to. Without the data behind these result, my crack statistical skills say that since soccer is up 17k and football is down 10k, basketball down 4k...that's almost a wash. The rest are net zero.

I'm not inferring that the decrease in football is directly correlated to the increase in soccer, but they do share a common season time line.

With the added bonus of getting to hit someone with a stick....where do I sign up ?

If that was the case, I wonder what the numbers are of kids playing ice hockey or field hockey in high school?

Ice hockey - 45k

Is HS attendance up or down?
