Cabell Midland (WV) 49 Belfry 7

Featured Replies

Belfry got outclassed in a big way tonight. CM simply steamrolled Belfry. Very impressive team!

No doubt the Pirates were over-matched and now they should know exactly what they need to work on.

Hang in there Belfry, the experience is what matters.

CM

581 Total Yards

Belfry

150 Total yards

5 Turnovers for Belfry

Key play was at the end of the Half trailing 21-7 Belfry was facing a 3rd and Long with around 1:30 left in CM territory. Pirates force a pass that is Intercepted and return for a bunch of yards to set up a TD. With only :30 left Belfry fumbles the ensuing kickoff and CM gets a TD pass with one foot down in the endzone.

Instead of entering the Half down 21-7 and getting the ball in the 3rd, Belfry goes in down 35-7 and that was all she wrote.

Wow, will Johnson central do the same to Belfry? I read that Johnson Central beat Cabell Midland in a scrimmage this year I didn't expect this.

JC had Midland down 28-7 late in the 4th and won by two scores. But it was a scrimmage.

Midland had also only been in full pads for a week FWIW

I suspect they can if Mattney wants to.

Absolutely not. JC did win the scrimmage 28-7 while each team played their 1st unit, final 28-21, but given that it was both teams first scrimmage probably not a lot of weight to put behind that result. I expected Belfry to hang in there with a chance to pull it off but CM is a darn good team with an immense amount of size and speed. Those attributes are something that is not typically seen from a WV school. Facing two superb teams in consecutive weeks could have caused a little overhang on the Pirates part and they may not have been mentally there as the Knights advanced their game plan. I fully expect Belfry to rebound nicely and the JC game at Belfry on Oct. 30 will be a dandy. Time to move on and just focus on winning each week, except the last one.

CM is very good. Belfry is very good in 3A. No match for a team the size of CM and #1 in WVA.

Scrimmages mean nothing!!!!

But lets also make no mistake about it... JC is very good and clearly will be the favorite against Belfry.

I still think people are sleeping on just how good JC is because of their level of competition thusfar. If anyone thinks South Warren is suddenly some juggernaut on a different level of JC I would stress that the past two years the Golden Eagles would have worked them. I think the gap has closed some as SW continues to evolve, but JC is a really, really good team.

Don't hang your heads. Put it behind you and move on.

Outcomes, yes. But they do mean something, otherwise no one would play them. To the kids they mean something as well. Personally I never wanted to lose at anything, pick up games, scrimmages, etc. etc. CM has a really nice team as does JC and Belfry. I would have loved to seen this game during the regular season between the two (JC and CM), would have made both better in the long run.

But i digress. Belfry will rebound and make a run at another state title. They play a brutal schedule and have the hardware to prove it works. Hopefully there were no injuries from this game and everyone made it home safe.

Does this say anything at all about who is or should be #1 in 3A, or just muddy the waters that much more?

Tell that to Midland when they got up on JC in 2014 and started barking like dogs, a little prematurely, on the sidelines at them. I work alongside some of the Midland faithful and they informed me that they did a normal week of game prep going off of their film from the first meeting in 2013. No love lost between those two schools, that's for sure. Scrimmages are what you make it, some take it to heart and others take it as a chance to learn and get better. Both of those teams probably do a little of both. Anyways, you are right. They give you a chance to learn where your soft spots are and then as a staff you try to solidify it prior to the games that carry a little weight.
