For everything the NFL does to receive criticism, they do much more to enhance their product. This being just another example. I can't understand the thought process that this rule/play didn't need to be changed.

Thanks, I asked this question tonight wondering if it has made a difference.

I read the Steelers went for 2 their first two td's yesterday and got them. Then decided to kick after the third TD and missed. I believe Tomlin said they will go for 2 more than they will kick it.

Steelers one of the best teams in NFL on 2 point conversions.

Have the missed XP's really had any effect on games though?? So while it's tougher, and the points are no longer automatics, I don't know that's it's made the games "better" or more exciting, or been the deciding factor in any games.

Scobee sucks, so..

If you have an automatic kicker, like the Jets and Pats do, there's no need to go for 2. When your kicker sucks (looking at you Pittsburgh), it's smart to go for two every time.

It does make things more interesting.

They've played 32 games, so it is not a huge sample size.

But if more points are being taken off the board, or points are added by going for two, it most certainly changes the dynamics of the game. Basically the NFL removed the equivalent of tap-in putts from golf and made it into a three foot putt. Still short, but not a gimme. If there are six TDs scored a game between teams, the NFL has added six plays to a game which normally receive no attention.

And once a team goes for two, does the opposing team then go for 2? Strategies change if you are playing a team like Pittsburgh that scores 5 TDs a game. That can be an additional 5 points. That is a lot of points in a sport often decided at the buzzer.

He was cut, but many felt that was the thought process behind Chip Kelly signing Tim Tebow. If you can have a system in place that gives you 2 points more than 50% of the time from the 3 yard line, the games would start being playing in factors of 8 and 3 instead of 7 and 3. If you can achieve the "2 points more than 50%" scoring, that becomes a valuable position on a team.

True. It'll take a few more weeks before we start seeing any trends, and then it will probably take a few more before we really start seeing how the strategy adjusts. I just know for me, personally, it doesn't make the game any more or less exciting.

This is going to start affecting sports gambling. Will there be a worse beat on an over than a kicker missing an extra point.

Good point. This probably has a bigger effect on the wise guys that set the lines.

The Pittsburgh game is a great example. Pittsburgh scored two quick scores and went for 2 both times and got them. They had a 16-0 lead right off the bat. That definitely would change the strategy for the opposing team. Pittsburgh ended up crushing them and it didn't matter but what would have San Fran done if they went down and scored?
