Fair system

Featured Replies

You guys that want to defend the KHSAA policies and our current allignment-then see if this makes sense? Here is my proposal to make it fair and equal to the entire state.

Eastern Ky can continue to get thier best players from West Virginia, or steal from the weaker schools, yes your Daddy can have a job! Louisville can be all open enrollment, but Lexington must continue to to have boundaries so they can't compete with the great Ville. Northern KY well- I don't even try to understand how they do things there? The rest of the state must only have kids that live in the 10 mile boundary of your town, pray none drive to a private school, or get hurt, marry little Jenny, or worse play soccer.

I believe this would work, woops this is the way it is now. Now all you smart folks who do this will say, well this is the best system we got; live with it Knute! Now if this seems like it this is a fair system, then you guys who are arguing that it is okay, must be second guessing your christian values at this time. My daddy Knute SR always said you reap what you sow and sooner or later you will have to answer for it. THE KHSAA NEEDS TO MAKE BOUNDARIES FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND PUT NON-BOUNDARY SCHOOLS IN A PRIVATE CLASS ONLY, HAVE A RATIO FOR ALL BOYS SCHOOLS, AND POLICE THE STATE TO STOP THE CHEATING!

Does anyone wlse find it ironic that the above poster has chosen a user name of the coach of probably the most well known private school in the country.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I am currently at a loss as to why you feel that schools without boundaries are cheating. I am not trying to pick a fight and I implore you not to take it as such, but bear with my as I try to elucidate my opinion on this matter.

Schools are there for the purpose of educating our children, I am going to assume we agree on this. As such the school that I am associated with has made that their goal first and foremost. Every student matters and every student is given every opportunity to succeed. My question is however, how do we determine who gets to attend the school that best suits their needs? Do we allow the children this decision themselves, or should it be the parents that make the decision? On the other hand should it be the government that tells our children where they can go to school?

If I happen to get a job in a neighboring area and I want my sons to enjoy the same benefits of the school I went to, then for what logical reason should they be denied that opportunity? Why should they be penalized for continuing a family tradition? Simply because my job and/or my residence situation did not place me in the immediate vicinity should that mean that my children have to miss out on all that my alma mater has to offer?

For that matter I have no problem with any school opening its doors to any student from any location. I am an educator myself and I feel it is my duty to educate all who come into my classroom whether the reside in the same county/neighborhood/township as me or not. In all honesty having had experience in the Oldham County school system I believe there are many kids on the Jefferson/Oldham County border who could benefit if there were an open exchange of students allowed between counties and districts.

In my opinion much of this debate centers around our definition of community. How do we define it? I feel that we as Kentuckians define ourselves and our communites as our Counties in many ways. That the good of our county or city outweighs the good of all the others. That we must help ourselves at the expense of all others. I honestly feel that as a Kentuckian, NOT as a resident of Jefferson County that an open policy between counties could make for an easier dialogue between the Urban and the Rural, between the Public and the Private, between the Open Enrollement and the Closed Enrollment.

In the end it is the purpose of our schools to educate all of our children. As Kentuckians it is our responsibility to educate the children of Kentucky. Should it matter whether they live in Allen County and attend Warren Central? I think both are in Kentucky are they not? We are all getting so caught up in our own little factionalism of this entire debate that we forget the most important parts of this whole discussion. What is important here and who is important here?

If you ask me this is what is important:

Educating the youth of Kentucky no matter the county, no matter the city, no matter the district.

Some may say that there are those who come here from other states for specific sports at certain schools, while there is always the possibilty for that to happen isn't it still important that this child is also educated? Is it really that wrong to educate someone from another state? Please explain that to me, because if it is indeed wrong then I would like to know how and why.

As to the issue of out of state students playing sports, we allow them to participate for valedectorian spots, we allow them to compete for the debate team, the math challenge team, to be the band leader (whatever its called), we allow them to compete for all kinds of things non sport related don't we? Why should we single out sports for non competition? In doing so, are we saying all the other things in which they do compete against Ky residents are irrelevant? Surely I hope not. Are we admitting that Ky. kids cannot compete athletically against kids from W. Va, or Ind. or Ohio and that kids from those states are athletically superior to kids from Ky? Surely I hope not.

If we are going to allow them to attend school in Ky, we should allow them to compete in all facets and aspects of the school in my opinion.
