Funny, b/c I watched De La Salle from California on TV last week. They did pretty well last year in California running the triple-option as well. At least Colerain runs theirs out of the I. The triple option isn't the problem. It is that Bolden is soooo risk adverse when it comes to the passing game. He's never even tried to develop some sort of screen package w/ all of the speed that he has. Get your athletes in space. You can do that out of the I still.

 

I have seen Colerain in a ton of games since 2006 ... and I certainly haven't seen a ton of the I in the last few years ... Lots of single backs, slots, wings ...

 

I think that Colerain sees things from a different level (good or bad) compared to many "flavor of the week" teams. First ... they run a program offense and a program defense that really doesn't change much from the Little Cards to the high school. They believe in their scheme and they are prepared to live and die with it.

 

Also ... look a little deeper ... it isn't just about the offense. It is about controlling the clock with a scheme that most teams do not see often. Then ... they play DEFENSE.

 

A famous coach (with about 8 state championships to his name) once told me ... when it comes playoff time .. you win championships by running the ball and playing defense. That is what Colerain wants to do ... and while they may not have a trophy case full of championships ... how many losses do they have since Bolden has been around ... I would bet that it is somewhere around 15. Keep in mind ... that is a gauntlet of playoff match ups ... St. X, Moeller, Elder ... etc. All teams that are permitted to operate under a different model (public vs private ... and they still win their fair share).

 

When you think about it that way ... they raise the kids in their program to fit that role. (Which goes to the point that they are never really developing passing QB's or a passing game).

 

At the same time ... they don't need a screen game ... they already have kids who push the edge ... and probably get there just as quickly as a screen pass would. The common screen pass now-a-days is just a sweep substitute for teams that are not fast enough to get the edge.

 

If you say that a vertical passing game would benefit the program ... that is certainly something that I would agree with. If you look at the numbers from around 2011 to 2013 ... there was certainly more of a vertical game.

 

With that said ... I really don't think Tom is "risk adverse" (but I understand why you feel that way). I just think that they believe in the program that they live by .. from young to old ... because there are many years where the talent is not what it truly appears to be ... but it works out and they are successful because you have kids running an offense and defense that they have ran since birth.

I always thought that it was strange that Tom Bolden did not try to develop a passing attack for the Cardinals because when Tom Bolden was the QB for Colerain, he set all or most of the passing records for Colerain and still holds them. He also had (or maybe still has) Steve Schweitzer as his QB coach. Steve was Tom's HS QB coach, so the knowledge is there, but the offence philosophy of Kerry's Coombs's OC, Rick Haynes, still predominates the Cards Offence.

I feel that a complete screen package would suit them well. It is easy enough to implement, uses the whole width of the field and can be used just like the run.

Yes sir. 8801 Cheviot Road. 75N to 74W. Get off the North Bend Road exit, turn RIGHT and keep driving until you see Colerain High School on the left. North Bend turns into Cheviot a half mile in.

You also have to have a very solid defense so your not playing from behind when you rely solely on the run. Your Cards usually have that.

This is a true statement. The defense must be solid to prevent from falling behind and forcing an option based offense to play catch up.

I'm thinking more along the lines of more than bubbles and half back screens. I'm thinking getting the d flowing and screening over it (that is a terrible description of my thinking) like Trinity or we used to at Hanover. Colerain is NEVER going to be spread it, but w/ the speed on the outside, throwing deep 5 times/game w/ a complete screen package would be more than enough to loosen the box even more. JMO.
