Round 3 "Blind Draw" Matchups for 2006

Featured Replies

For 06 at least, the third round will always pit an odd numbered district vs an even numbered district based on the info that was passed to me.

Not so in 2A next year with Region 3 playing Region 5, and Region 4 playing Region 6.

Thanks for speaking up as someone who knows some of the details. Since none of us have any real knowledge of how the draw was orchestrated, could you shed any light on that? Specifically, were all 8 #s thrown into the hat and the first 2 drawn were pitted against each other, and the next two, etc.? If not, then how?

Toots, I did not ask that question and don't know the answer. I'll try to get that for you. What I do know is that the fellow who did the draw is someone I would trust and do trust completely. I would have to think that the odds of the results occurring aren't as wild as some think if he put 4 odd numbers in one hat and 4 even numbers in another hat (as each class has 8 districts: 4 odd and 4 even), and pulled one odd number out and then one even number out four times for class A and then repeated the process for each of the other three classes. Don't know if that's what he did however.

LN, That's impossible, as evidenced by 2A's pairings. The odds are astronomical.

In 2A this year you have 3-5 and 4-6 in the third round. If they are both #1 seeds to advance to that point, there will have to be a fair way to decide who hosts. I'm not sure what an objective way to do that will be.

You are correct (and Centre Rocks you are too, although I assume you meant districts, not regions as there are only 4 regions in each class, but are 8 districts). I'll try to get you an answer.

Thanks. My mistake.

As to your first sentence I agree given the 2A pairings.

Thanks LN, I think we all would like to see a little more details about the process. :thumb:

For that matter, if the KHSAA had not done this in the dark of night and unbeknownst to everyone, they may not have taken on so much ill will about the results.

the 2A draw seems to now have Newport et al avoiding Russell in the early matchup now.

is this correct? and cause for more suspicion?

Oh and also the new superteam Mercerburg gets to avoid Russell, Belfry etc too I think?

I don't disagree with with your sentiment, I just hate the conspiracy types who seem something evil behind every decision the KHSAA makes.

It's like judges ....

their best decisions usually make both sides mad

While I have been as critical of the KHSAA as the next person on a lot of issues, I must strongly disagree with those impugning the integrity of the blind draw. I know for a fact that the blind draw was done by a long time employee of the KHSAA (not a BOC member) whose integrity is above reproach and it was done without any influence by any BOC member. And lest you question the accuracy of my information, just pm the Ru and he'll tell you that you can take what I am saying to the bank. I'm embarrassed for a lot of you posters who don't have a clue how the blind draw was done, yet you make baseless accusations about people's integrity. I sincerely doubt that any of you would want your integrity to be treated in the manner you have accused others. And if your response is that you didn't have any knowledge of how it was done until you read this post, here's a bit of advise: if you don't know what you are talking about, don't make accusations.
Leatherneck, I certainly don't think "the fix is in" like some other posters seem to, but I think the biggest problem with this change is that it came suddenly and with very little, if any, advance knowledge. This wasn't a proposal that came to a vote by the Delegate Assembly ... it looks like an end-around (to turn a football phrase) by the football advisory board to accommodate some complaints by member schools.

Then the draw comes out so nearly identical to the geographic-based pairings used in the pasyt, with one little twist ... Trinity and St. Xavier, the two football powers that draw much of this public-private rancor, put together in a relatively early-round matchup instead of their customary meeting in the state finals.

It just looks fishy. I think you have to acknowledge that.

Great post. My, and many other's, thoughts effectively encapsulated.

Especially in light of the Prop 20 and public v. private sentiments.

Any math guys on here that could figure the odds out?

Another thing I just noticed about the odds is that not only are 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 playing each other, they are playing each other on the same sides of the bracket as they did this year. This would increase the odds of the draw, as not only do you have to draw the same round three matchups, you have to draw the same potential round four matchups.

So district 1 doesn't have to travel to district 8 ever for the semi-state. Huh, but this keeps the costs down correct???:creepy: :sssh: Or was that just meant for the first two rounds?

I think overall it will keep cost down as in the 1st round when more teams play they stay with in district as opposed to half the teams in the playoffs traveling out of district. By the third round we should be down to 8 teams in each class right. Therefore only 4 teams would have to travel. Instead of the 16 that have to travel now in the current format.

Probably not enough of any issue to justifiy the changes but I belive that was likely the thought process. As it currently stands most teams have to travel for the third round anyway correct?

They don't have to travel across the entire state though. Wonder why districts 1 & 2 don't have to face districts 7 & 8 until state in either A, AA, AAA or AAAA? Probably wouldn't have jived too well with the KHSAA "expense" explanation. Must be luck of the draw.
