Pack had a long attempt earlier that year, maybe 58 yards or something, in a game where JC was dominating a game and Matney had the offense intentionally lose yardage so Pack could kick the long FG. It raised a lot of stink on here.

A fair catch kick is a free kick, meaning the defense cannot try to block or disrupt. Seems like I remember a lot of folks discounting it because of that. Plus anything Matney does comes under scrutiny because of prior antics.

I wasnt a big fan of the "losing yardage for a longer Field Goal" attempt.... but I thought the Free Kick was genius!

 

To know that was a rule and execute it was nothing short of brilliant in my mind.

It is a little used, and little known rule. Pikeville executed one a few years ago when Coach J was there

I think there was a little controversy. I believe JC was way up on Greenup county at the time (I think the final score was 50 something to 0), and it was very late in the game when the field goal occurred. So there may have been some folks that felt like Matney was running up the score a little just so a kid could break a record. It wouldn't be the first time he ran up a score, but this situation, IMO, is pretty mild.

You are correct that the defense is not allowed to rush on the fair catch, free kick rule. If im not mistaken this rule is even on the books in the NFL and rarely used (has been on the books for decades). Regardless, the record stands in the eyes of the KHSAA and kicking a football 60 yards and at least 10 feet high is extremely impressive line or no line. He routinely hits 60 yarders in practice now as this make came during his Sophomore year after only kicking a few months.

 

Whether you love him or hate him, Matney is a players coach. If I could kick like that I would love to have a chance to set a record and play for a coach that gives me an opportunity. In refernce to the 60 yarder: Matney had his kid call fair catch and it just so worked out it was at state record distance for a FG try. The staff actually thought it would go down as a 61 yarder as the ball was ever so slightly across the 50, but the KHSAA recognized it as a 60 yarder when the video was sent in.

I agree with everything you said and we all know why Matney has his critics. That said, he loves his players and I know that they would run through barbed wire for him. He is really good to them and Jim is a really loveable guy, which is hard for a lot of folks to wrap their head around.

 

Nobody should have any issue whatsoever with the player and he should be very proud of the accomplishment. I think it is outstanding and am very interested to see his prospects for the future. I am a big fan of young Mr. Pack. :thumb:

Would love to see him stay in state but have a feeling he'll have much bigger opportunities.
