1A Notebook for Week 1

There was certainly news in week one in 1A that will have an impact on the way this season plays out. Unfortunately it was bad news as Frankfort QB Anthony Robinson, a D1 commit to Western Ky., suffered a season ending injury. That injury has big implications for the west side of the bracket. Frankfort was already in a rebuilding mode and they were counting on Robinson to put the team on his back while the inexperienced guys caught up. Sad news for the Panthers and best wishes for a full recovery for Anthony Robinson.

With Robinson knocked out of the game, the Paris Greyhounds took advantage of the opportunity and got a big win over Frankfort. Paris coach Brian Washington has been building the Greyhounds proud program back for four years now and the win over Frankfort was perhaps the biggest win in his tenure. Paris is not going to rest on that win as they have their sights set on a deep playoff run in 2015.

With 1A's top ranked team Beechwood open in week zero, the highest ranked team in action was the Raceland Rams. The Rams faced a stiffer challenge than expected from West Carter. The good news for Ram fans is their heralded defense came as advertised. It was poor special teams play that allowed West Carter several big plays and kept the game closer than expected. But any win over a higher class team is a good one.

Speaking of wins over higher class schools, 2 Paintsville, 3 Russellville and 4 Pikeville all posted lopsided wins over bigger schools in their openers. The most impressive of these was Pikeville rolling over traditionally top program Prestonsburg. Pikeville may be ranked too low in the BGP poll, but the teams in front of Pikeville have also shown they deserve to be where they are. This will work its way out as the season moves forward.

Hazard was a team with a lot of question marks losing virtually all of its offensive production in roster turnover. The Bulldogs showed in week one that top programs are about more than a couple excellent players as they had no problem disposing of Pineville.

Fairview and Campbellsville also posted nice wins over higher class teams in their opening games. It was a good week overall for the 1A schools in games against larger schools.

The one 1A school that was on the opposite side of a drubbing was 10th ranked Williamsburg. The Yellow Jackets lost almost every starter from the 2014 state runnerup team. Lexington Christian posted a lopsided shutout win over Williamsburg showing there is a lot of work to be done in Williamsburg in 2015.

Looking ahead to this Friday, the top ranked Beechwood Tigers will play their opener. We will find out quickly how strong the Tigers are as they travel to the #7 2A Lloyd Juggernauts. Second ranked Raceland faces an even more difficult challenge as they visit 4A #3 Ashland.

For the second week in a row, Frankfort will play another top 10 1A school as they host #3 Paintsville. There also is another top ten 1A face off on slate with Hazard on the road at Fairview.

There are some good games scheduled this week in 1A that will certainly help us get an even better handle on who the top contenders are in 2015.
