If Mercer County doesn't win it all?

Featured Replies

Should they get rid of Marty Jaggers? If not, what is considered a passing grade for Coach Jaggers considering Mercer will be loaded this year?

No, Mercer will have a hard time winning the 2A title. It takes more than talent to win the title. You need health, Luck, and Chemistry Just to name a few.

IMO Marty will take them as far as they are destined to go. In other words they won't lose due to him not working or making bad play calls etc. He is one of the top coaches in Kentucky bar none. If they don't win it it will be because they get beat by a better team not because Jaggers didn't do a good job. Last year he took them as far as was meant. Russel had just a little more than Mercer did last year. This year is yet to be determined. I see the merger being a key in Mercer winning at a high level every year not just one. So there is no way Jaggers will be judged on one season. His career has already been written. Here's the way it reads: To keep it short. He is a proven winner. He has taken Lincoln Co. to the championship as a head coach (as well as many wins) and was a key in Danville's success over the last 7 or 8 years. :thumb:

It would be ridiculous to get rid of a coach just because he didn't win it all. He is a proven coach who did an outstanding job this past season and will continue to build the Mercer program.

While they will have talent this fall, remember that they are merging 2 different schools into 1 team and the kids won't even be in the same school buildings this school year. It will be a difficult task but I think they can get it done.

I think it would be ridiculous to even consider that. I mean Mercer Co. is adding players from a team that went 3-8 in 1A to a team that had only won one playoff game. I'm not saying they couldn't win the state just that it would be unrealistic to want to fire someone for that. I mean the kids aren't even going to the same campus this year. This is not 2 state powers that you're combining. I'll make my prediction now Mercer will not win or even appear in the 2A state title game this fall.:fight:

Marty will do what it takes to take this team as far as they can go. Last year he was faced with 3 starters having ACL injuries that took a toll on the play offs. There is not many teams who can do without 3 starters after 6 games and do as well as they did. Remember Russell did not kill them.

No way! Look at Russell's coach Ivan Mcglone he has been to 9 semi-final games and has only won 2 of them. It takes a lot of luck to win state titles unless you jsut have an overly dominent team but 2A is so competitive there is never really that one dominent team. I think if Mercer is going to win 2A that this is there year to do it because Russell will reload but they will not have the experience they did last year as most of their seniors this year did not see much action late in the year. I believe Mercer County has what it takes but Russell has had what it has took for the past 5 years and only won it once mainly due to some horridis luck. Maybe this year the stars will align for Marty Jaggers and Mercer County

How about this, if Jaggers doesn't win it this year will he ever win it at Mercer?

Do you even realize how much work it takes to get kids who have been teammates all their lives to play with a chemistry to win a state championship, not to mention, in this case, joining two teams who have, in a sense, grown up as each others arch rival!!?? This thing will take time to live up to the standards of some outsiders(fans). They may win it next year, and they may not..if they dont, it's no reason to get rid of Jaggers. He's a great coach, and if anybody can lead this ship to sailing in the right direction, it's him...it might be a cliche thing to say, but the whole " total team effort" thing that is used, well, that's exactly what will be needed for this merger to reach it's expectations. I mean, complete, 100% effort from not only the staff, players and school, but from the ENTIRE Mercer/H'burg community, especially the parents. Best of luck!! :thumb:

It will be tougher for Mercer after they move up to 3A, especially if Boyle stays strong. Mercer and Boyle will be in the same district.

Who knows. But there are several great coaches out there who haven't won a title but are in no danger of being let go for not winning a title (eg. Tom Larkey at Rockcastle, etc).

Why would anyone want to get rid of a coach or even predict it before we see what he will be able to accomplish with his "new" team this coming football season? If the boys at Mercer have the attitude that the boys at Harrodsburg have right now, this team will be successful in the fall. Will they go all the way? Only time will tell!

What? Russell not experienced?

What I mean is the Devils lose some seniors that have been playing and starting since they were sophomores such as Drew Mell, Tim Smith, Tommy Brown, Derek Timberlake, Michael Horn. There are a lot of holes to fill on the line onboth sides of the ball. It takes quit a bit of time for a line to gell. The onyl seniors that have seen serious playing time since they were sophomores are Kasey Clark and Sizemore. Josh Wills saw some action late in his sophomore year.
