NASA discovers Earth 2.0

Scientists have discovered the very first Earth-like planet orbiting a sun-like star in the perfect sweet spot where liquid water could be sloshing on the planet's rocky surface, a team of scientists at NASA, SETI, and Cambridge University said Thursday.

This is the Earth twin scientists have been searching for over the past 20 years. And it's called Kepler 452b.

Hey it would just take the millennium falcon about a year to get there.

Get ready. It's nerd-out time. :D

The Millenium Falcon was an extremely fast ship, even by the standards of those travelling at faster-than-light speeds. In standard hyperdrive, over 11,000 light years can be traversed in an hour. Of course, detours around objects in space make the true travel times considerably slower.

Even with detours for navigation, I can't imagine it taking the Falcon more than a day to navigate the distance between here and Earth 2.

...I'll go back to being a regular person now.

Edit: I thought that said 14,000 light years. If it's 1,400, the Falcon can make that trip in no time.

The thought that it could have life is super cool.

It's absolutely nuts that they can even see the planet.

Is there any way that we would ever actually be able to find out whether this planet has life or not?

Probably, at least indirectly.

"We" have been making some huge advances in telescope technology.

And one thing is for sure, many of those other lifeforms out in the Universe definitely know we are here. :wideyed:

It's completely dependent upon whether or not we develop faster-than-light travel or, at a bare minimum, faster-than-light observational technology so that we're at least not studying reflected light that was emitted from a star over a millenium ago.

... or, I suppose, if what- (or who-) ever is living on that planet has those capabilities and makes it known to us.

Even if we find traces of life right now, it would be traces from 1,400 years ago so who knows what condition it would be in now or if it even still exists.
