July 17, 201511 yr My sister and brother in law lived in Manhattan for a couple decades. They both work downtown in the city. About 3 years ago they decided to buy a house in Jersey and just commute into the city everyday. Well they just received their property tax bill. It has gone up 13% from last years rate. So they opened their bill and it is a whopping $21,000 tax bill lol. Thank God NKY has some sense when it comes to property tax. Also so just so you know, although their house is nice, it is not a mansion by any means. Their house is comparable to mine. 4 bedroom 2 story.
July 17, 201511 yr I honestly don't see how the average person affords to live in the big city. I belonged to a softball chat board back in the early 2000's when I was still playing and was looking to by a house. The house I now own, I posted a description of it on the board and asked guys what they would pay for something similar in their area. Guy from NY said about $400,000...in a neighborhood in Queens that you probably wouldn't want to live in. Guy in either San Diego or Seattle said about $600,000. And, of course property taxes on those homes in those areas would be extremely high as well. How does the average person live in such areas? I paid less than $100,000 for my house. How does the guy that does what I do and lives in NY buy a house? Sure he probably makes more than I do doing a similar job, but he doesn't make THAT much more than me.

I have a friend who is an accountant for his company, he makes $150k a year just as a regular senior accountant in NYC. Everything is more $$$$ in those areas.

July 18, 201511 yr My job requires me to review tens of thousands of tax bills from several different states. I'll pay attention to some of the higher rates. I'd be interested to know the assessed property value/tax rate that netted a $21,000 bill.
