July 8, 201511 yr Will be interesting to see where he lands. I hope this is the change Baltimore needs, for the people.
July 8, 201511 yr Rawlings-Blake said her motivation for replacing Batts was a spike in murders during the past month, and not a police union report criticizing her and Batts for the April riots following the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody.
July 8, 201511 yr Rawlings-Blake said her motivation for replacing Batts was a spike in murders during the past month, and not a police union report criticizing her and Batts for the April riots following the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody. At first glance, I would say thats bologna, but then I found this and that puts it in a more profound context: The Baltimore Sun
July 8, 201511 yr I guess nothing is surprising in this mess. I have no clue what's going on "behind the scenes" but Batts appeared to be professional and competent in my following of the events. The spike in crime rates after the unrest quieted down was alleged to have been part of a feet-dragging protest from the BPD along the lines of the NYPD's version after the Garner thing - don't do as much work to show the city how much they need you. Batts denied it and said they had to double-up officers for safety which is why they had less for patrol. That seems fair enough, but if he was sanctioning some kind of protest then, yea, he's got to be let go. Rawlings-Blake and her staff are somewhere between utterly incompetent and moronic. Her handling of just about every aspect of this has been bungled. So, I'm left to assume the sacking of Batts was 100% a response to the police union's polemic that blamed her and Batts for, well, everything and instead of being forthright about it she's issued an ill-conceived explanation that won't hold up in a few weeks.
July 8, 201511 yr I don't know if the police chief should have been fired (I really don't) but I think the person who fired him should probably go...incompetent...
