July 5, 201511 yr President Obama commutes non-violent drug sentences in move to reduce mass incarceration
July 5, 201511 yr Author Looks like 80 of the 30,000 people who applied for clemency will get their sentences commuted. I wonder how many people will still say he is letting criminals off the hook?

I'll reserve judgement to see if those 80 return to their ways that got them in the pokey in the first place. Would be very nice to know this turned their life around but I'll be honest, I ain't bettin' on it. Hope I'm wrong.
July 5, 201511 yr This looks to be a good move. I'm completely against the war on drugs and how it's currently being executed. The only caveat I will put in , is I reserve judgment because I haven't seen all 80 and their wrap sheet .
July 5, 201511 yr " ...... in a move to reduce mass incarceration." Great for those 80 and their families, but releasing 80 of the 30,000 that applied, or better yet 80 of the over 200,000 in federal prison hardly reduces mass incarceration. Let's call it what it is - politics - like it has been for every President that has ever given clemency to prisoners.
July 6, 201511 yr Looks like 80 of the 30,000 people who applied for clemency will get their sentences commuted. I wonder how many people will still say he is letting criminals off the hook? He just let 80 off the hook. I'm not a big fan of the whole clemency thing. A judge and jury decides the fate of a person and the person makes a written appeal for a president to read over to over rule the decision of a court hearing? Seems like the court would have a little bit more detail to make that decision and the judge would have a better understanding of the law. I also agree the clemency thing is just a political statement. To your point, letting 80 out of 30,000 criminals walk is not moving the needle.
July 6, 201511 yr Amazing how people are so enthusiastic about spending $50,000 / year to incarcerate, but object to $20,000 per year to educate. The conservative model for legislation and law enforcement is bankrupting us quickly, and is a drop in the bucket compared to any social program.

I forgot to mention that most of the prisions are privately managed, so there is enormous financial interest in the status quo at the expense of society.

I see where you're going pioneer, but nobody spends 20k a year to educate ? Mass has the top right now with 13k.
