Am I in the minority in that I never pay attention to what a gallon of gas costs? I work next door to a gas station and could not tell you the price. I have to get it regardless if it is $.40 or $40 a gallon.

 

Same way. I don't pay attention to it. I need gas, thus what it costs me is irrelevant. I don't understand why people get up in arms about it.

It's always that way. The KY and Ohio markets must think mentally they are Chicago markets. I have no clue how they get away with it.

 

Do you pay those prices? If so, then you answered your question as to "how they get away with it."

I'm all for the govt making sure no laws are being broken ie collusion. Other than that...no chance I want the govt involved in setting prices.

It's frustrating simply because you can see different prices for the same product in different areas. I complain, but ultimately, I'm not a guy that drives out of the way to save .05 a gallon. My time is more important than saving .50 on my gas purchase. As you said, I need the gas. I can't boycott, and even if I did, I'm the only person that would be inconvienced. This has been going on for years. No one should be surprised.

First this business had supply and an excuse, that's no longer and issue.

 

Then they had well it's dictated by the price of oil which is very down.

Pretty much yeah. You don't like the price, stop using gas. Simple as that.

For a frame of reference, Bloomberg compared the gas prices of 63 countries. The United States ranked 54 out of 63. #1 was Norway at $9.26/gallon. Relatively speaking the US pays much less for gas than our contemporaries. It is a product we so heavily rely upon though since we drive everywhere.

I'm saying they can charge whatever the hell they want. The only thing they should worry about is their bottom line. If they can charge $10 a gallon and not have a sharp decline in demand, more power to them. If $3 a gallon is too much for you, stop driving. Then you don't have to worry about how much gas is.

I'm not going to claim to know the ins and outs of oil pricing. I also don't like paying any more than I have too, although as I said before, I'll do it, and won't drive myself crazy trying to get the best price. But many of us here (not you specifically JA) love capitalism, and hate too much government involvement in business....but oil seems to be the exception. We hate taxes, and want to be able make whatever we are worth, but we go a little crazy and get upset with oil companies making too much.

 

I don't know the answer. But our government has a hard time doing anything efficiently...I have no reason to believe they would be any better at getting us cheaper gas.

If they wanted to. It's their right. They wouldn't though, because they know people just wouldn't buy it at that cost. It's all about supply and demand. A good business will price things at the highest possible price point without negatively impacting demand. If gas at $3 causes you to stop buying it, that's your choice. If you are still buying gas at that price, you're telling the gas companies that it's an acceptable price for the goods they're providing you.
