Somerset 2015

0-9 regular season last year was definitely out of the norm for a proud Somerset Program. Somerset had some young talent last season but VERY little experienced depth as evidenced by the number of games in which they had a lead in the third or fourth quarter only to wear down and lose.

To say there were some external issues last year would be an understatement, but 2015 is a new season. With a new season comes another tough schedule, Mason Co, Beechwood, Williamsburg, Hazard, Danville, LCA, Middlesboro, Perry Central, Caverna and Rockcastle Co.

Somerset has some decent numbers returning and a nice class moving up from 8th grade that has a player or two that could see some time on the field this season. Hopefully this has been a productive off season and the boys are ready to go come August.

I expect this Somerset team to make a push. If they can keep everybody's head screwed on right the talent is there especially with Doan back.

Is lack of composure a traditional issue w/ Somerset? I know that the last couple of times that they played NewCath in the Semi's NewCath was able to get under their skin pretty easily. In the mid-00s, the AD took it so far as to really push for the Public/Private split.

Mexitucky- I'm not 100 percent sure of your question but composure I don't think has ever been an issue. I think it's that when they have been a great team, they've always met one team greater.

As for this year, they'll still be young but talented. Last year it was youth and injuries that took a toll a long with some off the field problems.

I think this team will be tougher because of the winless season but they may not show it on the regular season record. I worry that if they take too many lumps early, they'll fall into some kind of slump that will be tough to recover from. (Opinion only)

I do believe that even if they play well, the overall regular season record may not reflect how good this young team is and could very we'll be a scary team to face in the post season. This schedule isn't going to be easy.

These two things were unrelated. It was actually the Somerset superintendent who was pushing for the public/private split, not the AD, and he was pushing for this before the two met in the 2005 semifinals. It was his own sentiment, not that of most of the Somerset fans. Any logical person can see that there simply aren't enough private schools in Kentucky for them to split.

To answer your question, I do feel like composure and discipline has been a problem for a few of the Somerset teams in the past few years.

2009 finals, PT might have been better but not 21 points better. I think Somerset had something like 8 turnovers in that game, one of which was a pick 6 on the opening play from scrimmage.

2010 semifinals, not trying to offend the Belfry faithful but you will never convince me that that Belfry team was better than Somerset that year. We racked up several penalties (deserved), starting RB gets kicked (also deserved), plus our best player being out for the first half after an appendix surgery and we all know the result.

2011, again from what I saw Holy Cross was probably the better team but not 28 points better. The first half the Jumpers were playing well and definitely looked like they were heading for the rematch with Glasgow, second half the wheels fell off and the unsportsmanlike penalties stacked up.

Just my opinion, but I definitely think that discipline has been an issue with some of the more recent Somerset teams. It seems like Lucas is taking the right steps forward to right the ship but I certainly think that these issues played a part in keeping us from getting over the hump.

No argument from me on 2010.

That was the second weakest Belfry team of the past 15 years besides 2009. They were playing with house money and just got hot in the playoffs. I think Somerset got intimidated by the stage.

Belfry executed a really nice gameplan. They took away Jackson and got him hot under his collar to the point he took himself out of the picture with an ejection. They gave Somerset's talented receivers ton of cushion but made sure to take away the deep pass.

I also thought Somerset got too cute that game. Manning was killing Belfry with his feet. Belfry dropped everyone back and only rushed 3 all night. Manning had 8 yards anytime he wanted it.. Belfry also gave underneath stuff all they wished. Somerset got a little frustrated and without a healthy Storm Wilson they simply couldn't keep it together down the stretch.

Belfry lived off the big play with a long QB run they set up, and a big pass to Pruitt.

There was no doubt Somerset was the more talented team.. Belfry just got them tight and frustrated and was there to win it once in a position at the end of the game. Belfry had also defeated a more talented Mason County team in similar fashion in the second Round.

What I will add is in the end in 2010 it didn't really matter.

Central steamrolled Belfry and I am not sure Somerset or Mason County would have fared any better.

You're probably right. I feel like we might have had the team most suited to compete with Central, especially with a healthy Storm. However, nothing I saw from Somerset in the playoffs or between Belfry and Central in the finals would make me think it was a game we should have or even could have won.

Somerset returns a ton of skill talent and, by all accounts, they've been really working hard in the offseason getting stronger and improving their skill sets. If the offensive line comes along they should be able to put up points on just about anybody they play. Defensively they'll need to continue to improve, they got a lot better last year as the year went on but we all know how that still turned out.
