If they're going to give that up they'd get Hamels so that they would have him beyond this season and would get a draft pick back if he leaves. Otherwise they'd just try to get Cueto for a prospect package and pick up another league average pitcher (which is all Leake is) for some lesser prospects from another team. That's actually what I meant... I misunderstood the post above as about Cueto/Chapman rather than Cueto/Leake.

He's a 4-5 starter on a good team that eats innings. Someone seeking depth will give up a middling prospect or two for him and that's about all that the Reds can hope for.

Dilemma - as an unrestricted FA, someone is likely willing to overpay ($ and/or years) him in the offseason. So you either trade him for a middling prospect now or lose him for a chump compensation draft pick (if you even get that any more, can't remember) after the year is over (OR YOU overpay him). Not any real good options because, as the player's association knows, there is always a goofy owner / GM willing to overpay a guy. Can't imagine Leake looks very good to the Sabre-metrics guys.

July 1, 201511 yr I think the Astros are the team I most want the Reds to reach a deal with. They have A LOT of offensive talent in their system.
