June 18, 201511 yr I've been swimming at Crescent Beach (just south of St. Augustine) on more than one occasion where sharks were a couple hundred yards out. I hate to be the bringer of bad news but it's more like they were a couple of feet out.
June 18, 201511 yr I was a beach lifeguard the summer that Jaws was released (yes, I'm that old). Chesapeake Bay area. Someone thought they saw "a fin" way out in the channel. Saw the news that evening and turned out it was a massive sea turtle. Still took a bit of cajoling to get folks to swim the next day.
