Based on performance and quality of opponents faced I lean towards Ramey.

I can't tell you Colonel- fan's thoughts, but Purnell's pitching this season has been excellent except two bad innings against the dirty birds. You take away the two innings from that game and he is sitting around .065 era on 5 wins against quality teams. In district play, Purnell has got the win on all 3 games including one shutout. The stats for the three games per the Rebel website are 18 Innings , 67 batters, allowed 6 hits, 3 runs, only 1ER 21 k's , 5 BB with an ERA of .050. This is against good teams in, IMO, the toughest

district in the region. I think the district and region games need to play out to determine the POY. There is a lot of different game plans by coaches during the season. I think the true reading of a player will be decided on how they do during their district games, district tourney, and region tourney.

Like the other kids mentioned, I think Purnell would tell you his goal is to do his part to help his team reach their goals. Whoever gets the POY award, It is a reflection on the team around that player.

I saw him pitch two very good outings. I would take him on my team any day.

Many deserving candidates out there. Is the vote before or after the regional finals?

I love it when we quote HS stats. All at the mercy of the scorekeeper, I get a special kick out of the HS ERA #s .

This year, the top players in the region are:

Ramey and Whitford

Combs Stringer and Slusher

Harrison and Kerns

Zieglemeyer

Purnell

Siebert

Ty Lyons

Guess stats are too objective for me. Too many generous score keepers. Too many at bats against 70 MPH pitching. Too much leeway with ERA

POY awards, All District, All Region, All State and everything in between is always stats driven. Not much else to go on when selecting those post season awards. You would like to think integrity comes into play when keeping stats but we all know how that can go.

Very difficult to say who is the player of the year. I think a couple from Highland and 1 from Beechwood are tremendous. Ostertag had the boulder put on his shoulder to carry Conner. Ziegelmeyer is going to be great but the injury bug caught him and has had an off year as a whole. Purnell had a fine season. Whoever receives it will be well deserved. Go to throw in names like Whitford and Brady Ast at Ryle

It just struck me ... unless I missed a name, no players from CCH being mentioned. CCH ALWAYS has one, or two, or three of the top players in the region. CCH is 24-6. I am not saying they should have a player in the running, just an observation. Second observation, with no top player is this Krump's best coaching job ever? Perhaps a topic for another thread.

Hands down player of the year is Todd Ramey of Highlands. He is batting over .500 with 7 homeruns and 54 rbi. Todd has been on base every game this year but 2.. The kid can play any position on the field..When starting ss Jake Whitford was out for 4 or 5 games during the year Todd played ss and did a fantastic job. The kid just gets it done day in and day out..

RB, you have any offensive numbers on Joseph Martin? Todd is having a fantastic year and he has great leadership skills too but I'm thinking Joseph's numbers are very similar and he's having pretty good year as a pitcher too. I don't have any numbers to back me up. If anybody does, let us know.

I don't have stats on Martin. I do know he has 7 dingers like Todd and he has pitched very well. I am pretty sure Todd has a higher average and more rbi's..I love Ramey for his versatility and knowledge of the game. He is a great ball player and an even better person.

Hitting over .450. 35 RBI. I think he is 3-1.

Is it me or does there seem to be a larger number of players in the discussion than prior years?

POY vote is going to be difficult. Tyler Lyons has had a tremendous year for us at Ludlow. Ramey and Martin have both been awesome this year. I love watching Ethan Harrison play for Dixie (unless we are playing them). Also, Henry Kerns has been Mr. Consistent. Purnell from CovCath, Slusher from Beechwood, Seibert from HC- the list goes on. Great years from all of these guys and quite a few more. Lot of baseball talent in NKY.

No disrespect to other players mentioned. There are many who have had great seasons but my money is on Ramey. Highlands has played the toughest schedule in northern ky and Ramey has put up those numbers against that schedule.

What about other outings? POY usually is an all around player who makes an impact in all areas of the game. How's his offensive numbers? IMO player of the year has to come from more than 3 district games. Not saying he isn't worthy of the award.

Purnell has pitched extremely well in all outings except the two innings against the dirty birds which was mentioned before. Beside that two innings , Purnell has pitched in seven other games, facing 108 batters. During that time, he allowed only 11 hits, had 34 K's , 5 runs scored w/ only 3 Earned runs. Pretty good numbers. On offense, He is below what you have seen from him in the last several years. As the three hole hitter all season,He started off hot and led the team for the first half of the season and has watched his avg drop to .260 the last several weeks. He has been hitting the ball hard, but right at the defense. He leads the team in hits, muti-base hits and 2nd on the RBI total. Boone's game plan this year was to not over use his arm to keep him strong for the finish. He has only played his best defensive postion ( SS) only a couple of times this season and has DH a lot after pitching the game before, Combined with resting days before pitching can take a kid out of rhythm. It is hard for a kid who is as aggressive as Purnell to take a back seat to the action. IMO, The safety net has hurt his numbers, but it is good to see coaches protect a player's arm who has a bright future.

Purnell's focus is to finish the season strong for his team. I'm sure he would be honored to see his name has been mentioned in this thread, but I bet his goal is just to battle hard and win some games in the next 2 weeks.

My mama could be 24-6 against that schedule.
