If you have a loose dog that confronts a postman I think you get one warning before they get the authorities involved. They can also refuse to deliver your mail, police officers can't refuse to answer a call just because there is a dog there.

Was responding to Joe's assertion that no policemen have been killed by a dog by pointing out that they do have dangerous and potentially deadly encounters with dogs. As HB20 said the reason there haven't been a fatality is probably because no police officer is going to let a dog chew him to death, he'll shoot it first.

And somehow they manage to handle these situations without shooting them. Numerous articles have been written in the past couple of years on the lack of training that officers receive on dealing with dogs. We've seen way too many videos and read way too many articles on family pets needlessly killed. This attention had led to a handful of officers being fired and/or charged for these incidents. You would think that more attention would be given to training the police for these situations to protect both the animals, the officers and their jobs.

And he's a terrible shot. Hopefully he no longer has a firearm...

Thank goodness the dog didn't try to hump the lieutenant's leg. That might have brought out SWAT, a couple of BearCats and a helicopter.

Well, obviously the dog is a pit bull mix so you just never know what those dogs will do when they bolt from a confined area at you. My choice would have been to use my taser but hind sight is 20/20.

Or, you know, maybe shoo it away and scold it since it never tried to bite anyone. It was running around like a big puppy. I have my CCDW. I carry. I've had several dogs get excited and jump on me just like that including a doberman and a great pyrenees. Haven't shot one yet.

That particular one...go to the other thread and look at some of the attacks on postal workers. That is a USPS site and talks about postal workers dying also but doesn't give numbers.

Agree. All I'm saying is in a crowd like that, think about taser first IF the animal gets aggressive.

Or we can just arm our postal workers with rocks
