April 28, 200620 yr Indiana has some issues as well: IHSAA set to consider multiplier All of this sounds vaguely familiar...
April 28, 200620 yr One proposal on the IHSAA agenda would adjust the enrollment figures by using different multipliers based on the percentage of students who get free or reduced-price lunches. Schools with the fewest students on the lunch program would have the largest multiplier -- 1.3 times their listed enrollments. The multiplier for those with the most students on the program, presumably schools with the poorest families, would be only 0.7, which could drop them to a smaller class. Another proposal would set the multiplier at 1.5 for all nonpublic schools Interesting proposal to base the multiplier by the percentage of students on free and reduced lunches. To me that says that if you are poor you can't compete. And when those schools do start competing they would complain about the fact that they have an obvious advantage because they are economically challenged and that all they have is sports. That the poorer areas do not have the luxuries of the richer areas and it is uneven.
April 28, 200620 yr Not sure the solution matches the claim of private school advantage. The stated advantage is that they can pull players from many different areas but how does looking at free/reduced lunch address the stated advantage? Of course, also, based upon the mindset some in KY, the publics in Indiana and all the other states that are saying this is a problem, must just be lazy and making up this problem because it really doesn't exist.
April 28, 200620 yr lbbc, Of course there are "problems" but the solution is in the mirror, not putting a tariff on those schools that are successful.
April 28, 200620 yr lbbc, Of course there are "problems" but the solution is in the mirror, not putting a tariff on those schools that are successful. So almost every state in the union is wrong. I always thought where there was smoke there was fire. I agree that so many of the schools do need to work harder and be more competitive. But there is no way that you can make the claim that I needed to work harder in my years of varsity ball. We averaged 70 games a summer on 3 levels. We coached middle school teams in the spring and summer to build our feeder programs. We coached in the elementary programs and took teams out of the county to build the feeder programs for OUR feeder programs. And yet we still struggle to compete against the private schools in NKY. I would assume that Coach Helton and his Scott County girls need to just work harder when they match up against Lex Catholic and it's team that is built from MULTIPLE communities while his girls live in one. Or are you suggesting that Coach Helton should look at drawing the best players surrounding him to Georgetown, as LC did. ALSO and maybe most importantly, I don't believe LC did anything illegal in getting those players. It is just the nature of a private school to draw from multiple counties where it is NOT the nature of a public school to do the same.

April 28, 200620 yr Like Guru said, look in the mirror. This spring there were ads in the NKY papers and open houses for private schools. Are you suggesting public schools need to start advertising and recruiting students from outside of their communities? I am not sure the local citizens would agree with the elected board of education reps with that use of public funds. NOTICE: I said students and not athletes.

Build schools and programs that people want and then let in anyone that wants to come. The local taxpayers should not be asked to pay for the out of district students. That is what tuition is for. I think that that sort of competition for students would force all schools to improve.

If this is the way you want it, than private schools should have to do all the same things that publics do. You want competition but get to do the things private schools do without having to do the things public schools do. There are hundreds of requirements that Frankfort puts on public schools that privates don't have. You want to compete for the students than make it a fair competition and you do the same things that publics have to do. Lots of the things that we are condemned for academically, we have ZERO control over. Also, the bolded, privates don't even do that. Bet you wouldn't want that.

It is just the nature of a private school to draw from multiple counties where it is NOT the nature of a public school to do the same. I think it is the nature of a public school to keep its student body within its city or county limits because in the next county there is another public school that can serve the students who live in that area. I understand the reason that a private school will take students from all over is because they are offering what some perceive as a better quality education in a better environment and there just aren't enough private schools to go around. That works great when you are talking about academics because the kids aren't really competeing against each other, unless we are talking about the academic team. Mayfield High school is a traditionally good football high school. If we turned Mayfield High School into this school that took students from Paducah Tilghman, Graves, Marshall, Murray, Calloway, Hopkinsville, Trigg, and anywhere else in Western Ky, we would be unstoppable no doubt, but that would be bad for all those schools in our area cause they would lose their quality athletes and have a difficult time competing.

Instead you seem to propose a place where the importance will go on how good can you make us look instead of teach every kid at their level. Because getting a kid that comes to HS with a 3rd grade reading level to a 12th grade reading level is a GREAT success but won't sell well in those ads.
April 28, 200620 yr Jefferson County schools had open houses recently. Saw the adds on the ciyt busses.

April 28, 200620 yr Jefferson County schools had open houses recently. Saw the adds on the ciyt busses. So are they competing against the private schools in Jefferson county?
