What am I being unreasonable about? I said I was fine if they put it up, played with it, and took it down that day. What is the need to leave it up?

Furthermore would they allow a recreation play set you buy at the store to be put if in the front yard like that for an extended period of time? Doubt it, whats the different.

A store bought set in the front yard is permanent, this was clearly temporary, however, if a store bought set, in the front yard, does not violate code, then why not ?

 

This is a case of P&Z flexing muscle because they likely got a call from a disgruntled neighbor....

 

As for the liability, no one said they let any other kids play on it, so no issue there.

It doesnt take much to blow cardboard, heck the wind was blowing my garbage can this morning after the trash people came.

 

Its not the people walking on the grass I have an issue with, its that cute little doggie of yours that likes to take a big ole :poop: in my yard. My own dog leaves enough :poop: for me to deal with.

Its neat to do something like that for a weekend.

 

I normally would play the 'big evil government' card. But keeping something like this for for more than a week is not prudent. Yes, large amounts of cardboard is a serious fire risk.

 

By next trash day it should all be gone - it should not take 15 days. If they really planned to leave it beyond that (and I am not sure how long it has been up) then the city was probably correct to put them on notice.

I can't imagine it was there just for one day if someone called the city. I would suspect other issues have been at play as well. And I highly doubt just one neighbor was upset.

 

I, personally, side with the city. There are ordinances, and if you don't like the ordinances in a city, then move.

Heck, in Louisville, you aren't supposed to take your trash to the curb before 6am and you're supposed to have the an removed from the cub by 6pm.

 

And they're lucky they don't live in a neighborhood with an HOA, because then you really get hassled.

I see the issue, and I would probably be the neighbor that complained to my wife and friends as to how crappy it looked, but I can't imagine calling code enforcement about it. Unless it was causing specific problems to me or my yard, I'd probably let it go. I've just got bigger things to worry about than a cardboard fort in my neighbors yard. Now if I was trying to sell my house and had an open house or visits scheduled, I'd probably be a little more vocal, but I'd take it up with this person directly.

I pay city taxes to have people that work for the city handle these type of situations.

 

When the wind blows, and this nice castle is all over my front yard, damaging my shrubs, cars, house from blowing around, will it still be cute?

 

What about when they leave it out, and it rains, gets all wet, starts grown fungus and mold, and then blows around everywhere, still gonna look cute?

 

What happens when it catches on fire, cause some doof threw his cigarette out the window driving by, blows around and catches my house on fire, still cute?

 

Like I said, up for a day for them to play and then taken down, no issue. Up for longer than that, I call the city.

Good Lord. Nevermind everything I've said in this thread.

So the guy (builder of castles) is a floral designer and the boxes he got were from decorative trees from work...so technically he was re-purposing the boxes and getting their full useful life.

 

BTW Plantmanky, in case you were wondering, apparently the castle has survived a windy storm, and the castle didn't waiver....:clap:
