They were king and queen of their homemade castle, but now a city in Utah is threatening to impose heavy fines and even a lien on the family home if they don’t tear it down.

 

Jeremy Trentelman built a cardboard castle for his kids, who are 2 and 3 years old, in their front yard.

 

Last week, though, Trentelman reportedly received a letter from Ogden City Code Enforcement officials stating that the castle was violating city code -- which prohibits people from putting junk in their yards.

 

Trentelman has 15 days to take the castle down, or faces a $125 penalty.

 

Trentelman posted a response on his Facebook page: “ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDIN ME!!!?!”

 

 

He later told KUTV, “They can also file criminal charges against us and levy the fines as a lien against the house. So they're not playing.”

 

Ogden code prohibits people from leaving “junk or salvage material” on their lawn, which could pose as a fire or safety hazard.

 

Trentelman said had he not received the demand to dismantle the fort, he would have taken it down in a few days anyway. But after getting the warning from Ogden, he says he will keep Casa Castle up until just before the penalty.

 

“It was a great project for all of us to build, and now it’s just (fun) watching them play in it, and watching their imagination run wild is just fantastic,” Trentelman told The Salt Lake Tribune.

 

The Trentelmans' standoff with the Ogden officials has prompted other residents in the area to build cardboard forts in their yards, too, as well as join a Facebook protest. As of Sunday, 64 people had joined the online show of solidarity, according to The Tribune.

 

Calls to Ogden city officials by FoxNews.com were not immediately returned.

Most cities don't just drive around looking for code violations. One of the neighbors called.

 

Personally, I'd hate if my neighbor kept a bunch of cardboard on his front lawn for several days. Don't want to look at it. Wouldn't be the guy that called the city on it, but I wouldn't like it.

If I was a resident around this house, and this is up just for the day and taken down. No biggie, its up more than a day, Ive got a problem with it, and unlike Getslow, I am the guy who calls the city.

If you are calling the city over something like this, I'd be glad you are selling your house. I'd even tape up the boxes in my yard to help you move.

I pay city taxes to have people that work for the city handle these type of situations.

 

When the wind blows, and this nice castle is all over my front yard, damaging my shrubs, cars, house from blowing around, will it still be cute?

 

What about when they leave it out, and it rains, gets all wet, starts grown fungus and mold, and then blows around everywhere, still gonna look cute?

 

What happens when it catches on fire, cause some doof threw his cigarette out the window driving by, blows around and catches my house on fire, still cute?

Furthermore this was in the front yard, come on, have a clue.

Once again you seem to have a hard line for any kids having any fun...I'm willing to bet that you have had to stomp out a brown bag of flaming dog poo once or twice in your life.

 

You wouldn't last 2 minutes in my neighborhood before you asked for help to pack up and move....the point of the story is that this guy has at least 64 reasonable neighbors, which is a lot better than having 1 disgruntled neighbor with dog poo on their shoes

Is this really a situation?! You need a police officer for this because that's who they are going to send when you call to report it. I think they have enough to worry about.

 

You must have hurricane force winds in your neighborhood if cardboard is going to damage your car. Bit of a stretch.

 

They have already said it wasn't going to stay forever so the mold and fungus is a bit of a stretch also.

 

Someday when you have kids, maybe you'll stop complaining about those other ones walking on your grass too.

Sounds like the guy never planned to have it up for long, particularly since it was made out of cardboard.

What am I being unreasonable about? I said I was fine if they put it up, played with it, and took it down that day. What is the need to leave it up?

 

Furthermore would they allow a recreation play set you buy at the store to be put if in the front yard like that for an extended period of time? Doubt it, whats the different.

It doesnt take much to blow cardboard, heck the wind was blowing my garbage can this morning after the trash people came.

 

Its not the people walking on the grass I have an issue with, its that cute little doggie of yours that likes to take a big ole :poop: in my yard. My own dog leaves enough :poop: for me to deal with.
