mtnref, in our Democratic Republic, there will always be money spent by someone who didn't agree with where it was spent. For instance, no one asked me if I wanted to fund the war in Iraq, but fund it I did.

I'd like details on how it's taxpayer funded and to what extent. I don't believe it would be much. Just because it's public employees doesn't mean it's taxpayer dollars.

What's the news here? Didn't the Supreme Court in Citizens United pretty much say that both unions and corporations can spend whatever they want wherever they want to advance their causes?

I think Mtnref's issue is taxpayer dollars being used. I am still trying to figure out if they were. I would imagine the dollars come from dues which means there is nothing wrong at all with them spending whatever the members are ok with.

AFSCME has been around since 1932. One would assume that the union has always donated in ways that would benefit members. That's what unions are supposed to do. Has something recently changed that would prompt Fox to spotlight how AFSCME spends its money?

Unions exist to help members, not non-members. Also, as everyone knows, numerous corporations also donate heavily to political campaigns and causes. Some of these corporations derive their income almost exclusively through government contracts -- taxpayer money, as you put it.

 

So I would assume that if one finds union spending patterns objectionable, the same argument could be made for big corporations. Right?

Interesting....I read something the other day about the $700K that was raised in days for the pizza joint owner in Indiana. Meanwhile, individual donations of $$$ to food banks and such are only a fraction of that in a year.

I don't like it when any employer or union takes money from its employees and donates it to political causes - democrat or republican. I used to work for a company that strongly encouraged (ie: coerced) its officers to donate to Bankpac, a group that donated to primarily republican causes. Even though I typically vote republican, I did NOT like that concept of giving them my money. If I want to donate to republican or right wing cause, I want to do it myself. If I was a union worker, I would think the same way when dues are being funneled to democrats.

Not sure I understand the comparison Mom. What or who people donate to DIRECTLY is their own business. I don't care if anyone donates to any cause. I don't like companies or unions taking their money and then donating it to whatever cause or party they like.

 

And BTW, I think individual donations of money to food banks far exceeds $700k per year.
