The article did say it was a forward-facing child safety seat, if there was an air bag involved the child was in the front seat, which aren't the safety seats supposed to be facing backwards in the front seat? You had to go back 19 years to fond something to fit your argument? As Jumper Dad stated, more lives have been saved. Airbags have always been an example where the government elects to have a certain number of lost lives - that would not have been lost had their rule/mandate not been in place to 'save' others. It seems they believe its OK for them to play God. And it was the insurance companies - whose main concern is the total numbers - who backed the airbags. The same insurance companies probably were pushing for this - because overall it saves them money. While this does not have same potential impact it is example of taking some reasonable and stretching it more and more till its hard to not be a scoff-law. Seat belts are good, child seats are good. The basic laws in these areas is good. But we just do not need more and more and more laws to 'protect' us. The nanny state can and does get out of control at times.

Way to dig deep going back almost 20 years back to the last century to find that article.

I am against the over reach of government as anyone, but I also see the need for some laws to be in place and to be enforced for the greater good.
March 26, 201511 yr People were forced to purchase autos with a deadly auto-robotic device in them - that they could not control, alter or disable without the threat of law over their heads. Terrible unnecessary deaths were caused because the government did not just set a guideline and then educate people - it MANDATED the deadly devices be 3 feet from your face. I am just not a fan of government mandating or creating penalties for some things that do not need government intervention. No one forced anyone to buy a car they didn't want. You could buy a 70 SS Chevelle, a 69 Boss Mustang, a 77 Bandit Edition Trans Am or even a 1990 pickup and not have to worry about the evil killer robot air bag in it. By the same token the Chevelle and Mustang don't conform to emissions standards or MPG standards so by driving one of those you can stick to "The Man" 3 ways!!!

There are currently negligence laws that apply to those situations and they absolutely should be enforced, and I would favor someone who opts to not use a child restraint in a car to be prosecuted for negligence if a child is injured or killed in an accident.
