State tournament

Featured Replies

How does lodging work. Does school pay for this or khsaa, do the school get gate money, if khsaa pays for lodging do they pay for the whole tournament . Just wondering

From Page 6 of the Sweet 16 participating teams guide (http://khsaa.org/basketball/boys/sweet16/boyssweetsixteenfinalteaminstructionswithforms.pdf):

HOUSING

A complete list of the tournament lodging assignments is included in this material. Each property is holding a block of

twelve (12) rooms for your traveling party until noon on Monday, March 16. You should contact the motel before

12:00 p.m. (noon) on that date to confirm or cancel your reservations. Any team failing to stay in the assigned

property will forfeit lodging reimbursement.

So it appears you have to pay, but then are reimbursed. I guess that leaves it up to the school to determine if they want to stay all week or leave after they are eliminated.

Correct. KHSAA assigns each team to a hotel. I'd love to see how they determine which team goes where. My senior year we were put in the Clarion, but the class after me got the Griffin Gate Marriot! :banghead:

Your allowance is covered through breakfast the morning following your elimination.

Food allowances do not begin to cover the expenses of playing in the Sweet 16.

In many regions the region champion reeceives two shares of the split money, in order to help them defray the costs of playing in the state tournament.

In 2000 we were assigned the Super 8, but would have stayed in tents if it meant playing in the Sweet 16.

Your school loses money when they play in the Sweet 16 but it is worth it.

This is correct. Schools receive no cut of the gate, and receive no cut of any tickets that are sold at their school (i.e. student tickets). Additionally, each member of the pep band must have a ticket (typically a expense the school incurs).

12 rooms are provided from the day of your first game until the morning after you lose. So, if a team chooses to stay after losing on Friday, Saturday's lodging would not be reimbursed by the KHSAA.

Meal money provided by the KHSAA doesn't begin to cover the cost of feeding a traveling party. It's not close.

So, it costs schools money to play in the state tournament, but as others have mentioned it's one of those good problems to have.

And, as Mustang pointed out, typcially the share(s) received from the regional tournament would cover the costs.

Great summary. People donating money to help is big as well.

How can a nobody get a nice seat near the front for their team's games? Last year when my team played in the first round, I looked down in front and saw mostly central office folks and their families sitting there. I want this perk too!

Thanks. How can I find out if they are in my team's section?

The KHSAA website has a place to view the team sections for the first round...

Lower arena seats are sold in blocks of two and four for the entire tournament.

Member schools receive two tickets compliments of the KHSAA, they purchase a second set of two and have the option to buy additional lower arena seats in the corners. All of these seats are sold as sets for the entire 8 session tournament.

Watch the advertising section of this website for individual session tickets as they become available.

Participating teams should not lose money to make money for the KHSAA. Its a joke. If you go up on Tuesday and make it to the finals your program will go in debt. Yes its a great debt but shouldnt be there. The KHSAA big wigs live good during the Sweet 16's staying at the Hyatt with all expenses covered. Would like to know what the KHSAA pays for members housing/food during the tournament while putting teams in Red Roof Inns and Super 8 hotels.
