Lions DON'T tag Suh

Featured Replies

They can't afford to tag him. The defensive lineman tag number is 11 million. Since he is making 22 million if he was to be franchised it would be at 120% of his yearly salary so his tag number would be 26 million this year.

Nevermind, I misunderstood.

I agree that's the reason, and his FA suitors may not be what he expects either.

The way the franchise tag rules work is that if you are already making more than what the designated tag number will be for your position then you'll be owed 120% of your salary if the franchise tag is placed on you. They mention that in the link also. I think if he had been franchised he'd have made 26.8 million dollars this season.

From the link:

Ndamukong Suh will hit the open market.

The Detroit Lions official team website announced that the Detroit Lions will not place the franchise tag on the defensive tackle.

The tag would have cost Detroit $26.8 million because his renegotiated salary in 2014 was $22.4 million (the tag calls for 120 percent increase in a players salary from the previous season).

The number seemed prohibitive from the start. However, general manager Martin Mayhew wouldn't rule out using the tag to ensure Suh would have been in Detroit for at least one more season. The reality of paying such an exorbitant amount to one player -- regardless of his importance to one of the NFL's top defenses - likely persuaded Mayhew to decide against the tag.

Nevermind, I misunderstood.

I wouldn't be surprised if he stays in Detroit but not for 22 million a year.

I think you're right.

Think this is the general consensus, but he might test waters to see how much he can actually get paid.

Colts and Dolphins seem to be the most interested.

If it's $$ he's after he needs to go to Florida or Texas teams, no state income tax. With as much as he will bring, he has to consider it.

....

One of his buddies who plays for the Red Wings tweeted out something about giving a $1 to a bunch of people if Suh isn't back in Detroit. Thought it was funny. I like when pro athletes from different sports in the same town cross-pollinate.

I'd love to see him in stripes...but I realize that isn't going to happen. Oh well.

Oh, I'm pretty sure we'll ALL see him in stripes before too long.....or bright orange.

I think that is as incorrect as it could possibly be, but I guess time will tell.
