KHSAA: 8th Graders Playing Up

Featured Replies

I read today that the KHSAA is implementing a new rule regarding 8th graders who play up in soccer (and football).

They can only play frosh/JV (not sure if that's new or not).

They CANNOT play in a game if there is a JR playing. So if the 8th grader plays JV and plays a team that plays a JR on the JV team the 8th grader cannot play.

How new is that rule??

Saw it an online clinic for coaches and officials. I think the part about not playing if a JR plays is new.

Interesting. I know Beechwood football has traditionally always had one or two 8th graders playing up. I wonder if that will have any impact on that.

The rule is not new for soccer. The 8th grader cannot play JV if there is a Junior on the field, for either school, not just the opposing school.

This has been the rule for some time. Perhaps just a point of emphasis.

Possibly. New to me.

I am not aware of this being enforced by the refs, I think the schools pretty well "police" themselves, I think most coaches seem to play by the rules on this one.

In some cases, I am not sure it is a very logical rule. During your middle school years you may play for the Freshman squad but not JV because of a Junior being on the field. Once you are a Freshman, you can play Varsity, against Seniors who were Juniors just the year before.

Seems strange. I'm not sure the point of the rule, especially since 7th and 8th graders can play varsity basketball or wrestle at the varsity level.

From my understanding rjs, it is because football and soccer tend to have much more physicality, when compared to other high school sports.

I think this has also been the case on the girls side as well. I vaguely recall a game where some juniors were not allowed to play in a JV match against a smaller school that did not have a frosh team but had to pull up 8th graders to field a JV team.

Agree.

I get football. But wrestling is less physical than soccer?? I'm not familiar with soccer and rarely watch it. But is high school soccer that much more physical than other sports (aside from football)

I get what you are saying rjs, although not familiar with HS wrestling, I would also call it a "physical" sport.

I guess the term physical, is relative when it comes to comparing soccer, and wrestling. My take is that wrestling is much more of a sport in which strength, and technique, play a large part in determining who prevails and I would guess that in many cases the kid that is more physical comes out on top. I would consider the physical aspect of wrestling to be a much more controlled than the physicality you see in HS soccer.

When it comes to soccer, the term physical is usually referenced when you are talking about beating, banging, pushing, and kids running into each other. From my experience, there are many different types of soccer being played nowadays, let's just say if you like rugby there are some HS matches that you might like to take in. :)
