February 9, 201511 yr I use H&R block, file federal for free, and then file KY snail mail on 4/15 because I always have to pay.
February 13, 201511 yr I always use turbotax and the deluxe version is $39.99 as a return customer (same for state). I am hoping my KY refund is not too delayed. The $39.99 version doesn't include state. State is the same. For $59.99 I got both.
February 13, 201511 yr The $39.99 version doesn't include state. State is the same. For $59.99 I got both. I have used turbotax online since 2002. We get a discount through work so I get the deluxe with State for $39.99. I haven't filed yet but I hope they straighten the state tax mess up soon.
February 13, 201511 yr I always do my own taxes using Turbo Tax. I am a little nervous using Turbo Tax this year because i sold and bought a house last year. Does it walk you through that process okay? Not sure if i should have a CPA do them this year or not?

If not, there's no taxation on it.

February 13, 201511 yr Did you have a gain on sale of greater than $250K ($500K if you're married)? If not, there's no taxation on it. So if I buy my house for $100,000, live there for 10 years then sell it for $450,000 I have to pay tax on $100,000?
February 13, 201511 yr So if I buy my house for $100,000, live there for 10 years then sell it for $450,000 I have to pay tax on $100,000? Are you married? If so, no, the exemption is $500K. If you're single, yep.
February 13, 201511 yr Are you married? If so, no, the exemption is $500K. If you're single, yep. Interesting. Does the amount of money I put into the house make any difference?
February 14, 201511 yr Interesting. Does the amount of money I put into the house make any difference?Yes. If you bought your house for $100k and put an additional $50k into it after you bought it, your new basis would be $150k. If you sell that for $450k you have a gain of $300k. If you are single, you pay tax on $50k ($300k minus your $250k exemption) If you are married, you pay no tax at all because your gain of $300k is less than your $500k exemption.

Is it taxed as capital gains or does it just go as regular income?
February 16, 201511 yr I believe it is fixed. I filed my on Monday and it was accepted on Tuesday. It is fixed. Received my KY refund on Friday.
