A very good game and a great win for Scott.

The first quarter was pretty back and fourth with Scott leading 20-16 at its conclusion. The Eagles went cold in the second quarter as the Indians raced ahead to a 33-22 lead midway through the second frame, but Scott managed to regroup and cut it to a two possession game by the halftime horn.

The Montgomery Co lead fluctuated the rest of the way, typically staying in the two possession range.

 

A big turning point in the game was a possessions where the Indians tried to trap Ohmer but Chism was called for a foul. He and Ohmer went to the ground and got tangled up in front of the Scott bench. All the players on the court rushed in around the skirmish and the Scott bench jumped up (nothing wrong with what they did, just showing the energy/tension it brought). That incident seemed to energize the Scott team, while frustrating the Indians as shortly thereafter a Montgomery Co player was called for a T when he rolled the ball out of bounds with a bit extra emphasis after going to the ground following a rebound and being called for a walk.

 

Eventually Scott had cut the lead to one and the Indians had the ball with under a minute left, when Montgomery Co called a timeout. They had trouble getting the ball in, but finally found Parsley in the corner. One official called a foul, but he was overruled by another official who instead issued a time-out to the Indians. The Indians again struggled to get the ball in and an official away from the ball blew his whistle (my first instinct was the Indians had called a time-out too quickly) and pointed the other way. I didn't see his actual call, but I'm told he called five seconds on the inbounder.

 

Scott then came down and got a driving layup from Schneider to take the lead. Scott did a great job during the game, especially the second half, of getting to the basket on dribble penetration, and you could pretty much see it coming that it would be their play to try to take the lead.

 

Down one the Indians got a pair of good looks from 3 in the last 5 seconds by Hodgson and Fuller, but neither would drop.

 

The Indians had 3 guys in double figures

Walker - 16 (4 3s)

Combs - 15 and 9 rebounds

Hodgson - 13 (Including 9 straight for the Indians in the 3rd quarter) and 9 rebounds.

 

Scott had no answer for Combs inside, but foul trouble kept him off the floor for a lot of the second half.

The Eagles did a great job on Fuller though, who was forced into what may have been his least efficient game of the season.

 

From all the talk of how up and down Scott is, you could see it in this game. They looked terrible in the second quarter, but turned it around and played great in the second half. They also defended much better than I expected based on the scores I've seen from them.

 

Overall this was a great game that should help prepare these teams for the postseason.

I wonder about the bolded. An off official?? Why would he be calling the time on an inbounds pass?

I copuld be wrong but I think if you check the rule book for high school basketball that call is only for the official who gives the ball to the inbounder. The college and pro game may be different

That would seem right to me but you never know with some officials.

 

Last week I was as Madison Southern at East Jess and MS was inbounding the ball. Kid inbounding the ball tried to call a timeout but the ref whistled him for 5 seconds. Nothing strange until that ref then conferred with the other two officials on what the call should be. You could tell by their body language they were like "You're counting, he called the timeout to you, it's YOUR call." It was an odd sequence.

I have no clue. It was a sideline out of bounds, but basically in the corner in front of the end of the Montgomery Co bench. The official who gave the inbounder the ball was just below him on the baseline. The official who made the call was the one closest to the midcourt line, a little bit above the head of the Indians bench.

I was extremely surprised. Like I said, my first instinct was that Montgomery Co had called a time out too quickly (in my head it was at about 3 seconds). When I looked back at him to see the call he was pointing the other direction. I didn't ever see what the call was, and kept looking for it, but a couple people close-by confirmed it was a 5-second call.

I saw a couple posts on FB last night regarding a "very quick" 5 second call on MOCO, this must be what they are talking about. One person actually mentioned that you could see the ref closest to the play was still counting while the other ref made the call.
