Winningest Teams in Kentucky since 1990!

Featured Replies

Remember that Danville was 2A until '99, so most of the time period they were one level up.

Did all of these teams play a district schedule for the entire whole period in question???

I'm pretty sure that one on this list didn't and maybe more.

I can only think of Lexington Catholic that did not.

Nice job how long did it take to do this.

Thanks, it was kind of a work in progress. I certaintly didn't do it all at once but over the span of 2 days I worked about 2 hours on it each.

BTW, I was not aware that BG had been so outstanding for so long.

Neither was I, that was quite interesting.

And, to our Trinity friends, if you guys will quit beating us in state championship games, X may be able to gain on Danville.:D

Sorry.:D

Not really but I was just trying to be polite.

Kudos to all teams listed. It takes a lot to stay on top for 16 years. Some schools may have had a super coach or player to inflate a record for a short period, but all of these schools have withstood the test of time. Our last two head coaches, Dan Haley and Kevin Wallace have a combined record of 224 wins and 55 losses since Coach Haley took over the team in 1984. Since Coach Haley retired, Kevin has a 105-22 record in ten seasons. But not too many championships during the period. Hopkinsville, Paducah Tilghman (several times!), Owensboro...you get the idea. Old bitter rivals playing for the Region One title year after year! But the Purples have scheduled some toughies during the seasons (beat Danville 8-7 at Danville in 1989, then the Ads got waxed 34-0 at Donaldson Stadium in 1990). BGHS is one of only five teams to beat Highlands in championship play (in 21 appearances). Thanx for recognizing our tradition! We're awful proud of the guys!:D

Big Time congratulations for the longevity of all the teams on the list!:thumb: :D

You have a lot to be proud of. I attended the BG-X game last season. An X player, after the game, told me that BG was one of the hardest hitting and classiest teams he had seen. I look forward to the rematch with BG. I do not know future plans, but I would not mind opening every season with your school. Aside from the weather, it was a wonderful evening. The setting, at WKU, was ideal. The stadium accommodates a large crowd, and is on a campus I have long felt is one of the most attractive anywhere.

That's really nice of you to say! We're looking forward to hooking up again this season too! One of the players' mother has a great friend who stayed home in Louisville and listened to the game on the radio. She was told by her friend that Mike Glaser said on the air that the BGHS defense was the best he had seen in a long time! Our record against X is 0-7, but last year's game was the closest game in series history. Mrs PH and I are looking forward to seeing some of our new X Friends at WKU, and we hope to get to meet you too! I'm easy to find...just look for the guy in a wheelchair wearing his old #57 gold jersey from 1976, my senior year of eligibility! See you there!:thumb: :D

With our 10 game regular season schedule, it is amazing that some of the teams come in with 175+ wins in 16 years. And 193 is just unreal. That is an average of 12 per season and to maintain that kind of excellence is astounding.

Which says as much as anything that has been said thus far, that the current four class system with pure geographic playoffs has allowed the rich (not $, but success) to stay rich or stay richer, while the poor stay poor. Until something changes, these schools will remain on the list which explains why some of them are the loudest opponents of five or six classes. Great list and great research!!

Please explain. Aside from X and T, both of whom have large enrollment disparities, what about the current playoff system has permitted the "rich to stay richer." I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, but would be interested in learning the specifics of your hypothesis.

Interestingly, 1990 was the year Bardstown's Joey Downs started coaching the Tigers. He was 1-9 that first season, or his standing here might be a little higher. He has had consistent winners since then.

Lawrence County is the one I was thinking of.....But they did what they needed to do to get on the list.

I'm pretty sure the Bulldogs were 11-0 in 1990 not playing in District play, but I'm pretty sure they got back into District play shortly there after and had a powerhouse for the rest of the 90's and into 2000+:thumb:
