Thanks to all who played along in the other "Do You Know Who This Is?" poll, as the results did seem to help settle a particular question, although in a somewhat unscientific, not so all inclusive fashion.

If you've not yet answered, we still are welcoming indefinitely more responders to help develop an even more clearer picture to help answer the original experimental question.

In the same spirit of the other poll, I now propose this question, which I probably should've asked first because some who responded "Yes" to the other question, might benefit from from that poll aiding them in answering this poll. It's too late to roll back and start over, so this will be taken into consideration.

Again, if you do know please do not say as we're simply gathering this "scientific" data with only the need more or less for a "Yes" or "No" answer.

Thanks again for playing along.

I probably should've given the option to multi-select from the various choices considering that more than one answer could apply for some, but so be it. This should be sufficient enough to gather the necessary data.

I do believe I see a hint in the picture

I THINK I do...and if so I believe that picture is probably about 25 years old or so?

Yes I do. I didn't notice the poll had multiple options though. I voted "yes, of course" however I should have voted "yes, I can name each individually."

The name of the guy in the lower right is very close to my real name. One letter difference. The last letter of his last name.

I'll post this in both the "Do You Know Who This Is?" and the "Do You Know Who These guys are?" Poll to finally explain the origins of why I started the poll to begin with.

Jim Schue and JDEaton were going around and around in a recent Grateful Dead thread, and these are excerpts of their discussion.

Jim was generally leaning towards expressing his disinterest in the remaining members carrying on without Jerry Garcia, and how without his face front and center the remaining guys were nothing but a tribute band to him.

Jim Schue said:

"I like the Grateful Dead. I don't much see the attraction in this tribute band thing they do in order to keep milking the sacred cow. The attachment of someone so gloriously, awfully bland as Bruce Hornsby doesn't help my opinion."

JDEaton replied:

"You do realise that Hornsby has played with the dead a ton of times, right? This isn't a tribute band, by any means."

Jim Schue replied:

"Without the leader, it's nothing but a tribute band to me. And Bruce Hornsby stinks."

and JDEaton responded:

"Hornsby played multiple times while Jerry was still there.. Jerry obviously thought he was good enough, but obviously you knkw better than he. You obviously don't know what your talking about either.

By the way, there was no leader with the Grateful Dead, every member had their own part."

Jim Schue responded:

"If I were to show a snapshot of the "current lineup" of the Grateful Dead to a random sampling of a few hundred people, I bet that maybe 5 percent of those people would be able to ID the band. Show them an old one with Jerry in it, that percentage probably goes up to 80."

and JDEaton responded:

"I seriously doubt that you could show 10 random people a picture of the band with Jerry in it and 8 of them could tell you that's the Grateful Dead. Recognition is not what its ever been about.

As far as the current lineup goes, you have 4 former members"

Jim replied:

"Jerry Garcia is only one of the most recognizable faces and sounds in rock'n'roll history, so we'll have to part ways here."

and JDEaton responded:

"He is by his own fans. Not so much by everyone else."

Jim replied:

"Disagree. You act like the band was a private secret among Deadheads."

and JDEaton responded:

"They definitely weren't mainstream. The songs were too long for radio, no music video's etc... That wasn't what they wanted. Which would make it hard for the average person to recognise Jerry. You claim that 8 out of 10 random people would, I think that's absurd."

Although we're just a very small portion of the much larger general public, the results obtained have been interesting in some ways to help add further input to their debate.

Do you think the results solved anything, or helped us see any better who between Jim Schue and JDEaton has a firmer grip on reality related to this topic?

That is of course if any of you care one way or another, and if you don't that's perfectly understandable.

Just for kicks I wanted to see what we could learn here.

Ok...I was wrong. I had in the head the Beach Boys...obviously I was wrong. Were Garcia in the picture? Then yes I would have recognized the band.

One of my housemates, when I lived in Wisconsin, was and still is a Dead Head. He had posters up everywhere.

I saw the Grateful Dead several times in those years. The nice thing, or not depanding upon your point of view, about seeing The Dead, was that you got so burnt, that you forgot most of the show and the next concert was like new again. :D

Does this mean I lost? :(

I will not, I repeat, will not concede, lol. Sample size is to small to really get a good read on the actual numbers.

BBF! You doin' sales for VH1 Classic, or has The Grateful Dead movie been running all week?

LOL, funny you mentioned that, I had someone txt me about it being on about an hour ago. I've seen it multiple times, but figured I'd record it anyway.

That's what I thought too.

I'm guessing that you thought that the grey haired/bearded dude was Mike Love. I can see that.

I suppose I'll count it as a win from the same standpoint that UNC counts Helms titles as National Championships. You have to admit, even with the small sample size, it was a convincing win. :D
