That’s your opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it.

However, this poll would seem to indicate that not everyone shares your opinion.

It would also indicate that not everybody shares your opinion.

Didn't you go to the academic rich Russell?????:D

I skipped math.:p

Hatz, Graybeard - Thanks for the kind words about the Rock. I don't think either choice if a bad one IMO. Both programs have exceled and both have a lot of the same qualities in every area that exceed a lot of others in the state. As far as Rock is concerned there is no doubt that the teams they had to play in the 90's were extremely tough. I know since 1991, they have hosted a 1st round playoff game every year. That means that they have never gotten worse than 2nd place in their district in 15 years. They had to play in a tough district with Somerset, Corbin, Middlesboro, Bell County, Whitley County (in their hay day), Cawood (also in theirs), etc. I can remember when they had the 1991 Danville team beat at Danville in the Region Championship and all they had to do was run the clock out and Rock's RB fumbled and Danville picked it up and ran it in for an 80 yard score that won the game 18-13. In the 90's Rock lost to Danville and Boyle County a combined 7 times. All by close margins and sometimes in Overtime. Rock would always get a #1 seed and have to play Lexington Catholic or Boyle County in the mid-late 90's and that was always a downer but hey they were great games then. Then they had to play the NKY powerhouses and have a record of 4-1 against them. Then when Rock went back into 3A in 1999, they have been to the Region Championship Game 5 out of 7 times and missing the game by a combined 6 points in two years and 1 overtime. This is with no more than 45 players on the team, not sure why but Rock has never had large numbers on the team but they always get it done. I've seen a lot of 1A and 2A schools with a lot more on the sidelines than Rock. I'm just speaking for Rockcastle and I'm not 100% positive about the teams Russell has had to play in the last 15 years but it would have to be some pretty good teams to match up with those mentioned earlier.

Just a few playoff losses that come to mind.

2004 lost to Belfry in state semi finals to Belfry.

2002 - Lost to Breathitt Co by 1 in OT on a missed extra point.

2000 - Lost to Lexington Catholic by 1 in OT in regional final.

1999 - Lost to Boyle Co during there hayday.

Going back through the 70s, 80s and 90s when Russell was AAA, there were some very tough playoff losses to teams such as Highlands, Danville, Connor and Ashland.

Russell also used to play traditional powers in Ohio(Ironton, Portsmouth, Wheelersburg, Portsmouth West) and WV(Barboursville, Milton, Man, Ceredo Kenova, Lindsley Acadamey), before district realignment, that really made for a difficult schedule. The bottom line for me is that both teams have been very successful, but Russell's much longer history as a football program is the deciding factor. IMO

Also I would with Fletch that Russellville would have to be right in there. I know not so much of late, but their history and tradition put them right up at the top.

Except in the voting. How they are 11 votes behind that northern Kentucky football powerhouse Ryle amazes me, whether they are in the top two or not. Geez.

This thread is about you is the best and if Rock/Russell played 10 times, Rock would win 8. That is pretty much year in and year out. Russell won the state championship this year in 2A, which is always the most open class in the state. Rock had about 10 injuries to key players and still made it to the final 4 of 3A, and gave Cath all they wanted for a half until the numbers took over. I think Rock has not had a losing season in the past 24, and they sure do not duck anyone.

GO ROCK!!!!!

When was Russell in the same region With Lex. Cath.? Lex Cath has been with Boyle forever. and Boyle won 5 titles in a row. This past year was Cath. first regional championship.

One criteria for voting was fan support. Rock gets invited to a bowl game every year and has to turn down several bowl games because of being booked up. Bowl committees like to invite teams that bring a crowd with a respectable program. In 2001 AAA State Championship game the attendance record was broken at over 9,000. Presently, the 2001 and 2002 ranks 2nd and 3rd for most attendance. 9th and JV average at least 8-10 wins a year. Tradition is older at Russell but Rock has caught up on a lot of things the past several years. Facilities have improved greatly, but maybe not as much as Russell. This will be a close call. May take a FG in OT to win.

They were in the same region. It just wasn't the final. Lexington Catholic and Boyle played in the regional final the next week. My mistake. The year was 2000. Catholic scored on a fourth and long in OT to tie it up and added the 2pt conversion for the win.

Russell battled through many injuries as well last season. The rest of this is conjecture. The AA being weak card just doesn't play. Russell was contending for AAA long before Rock got on a roll.

You are welcome - the kind words were well deserved.

I didn't get a chance to check on this thread over the weekend. I see that Russell won a close race - congratulations. Russell and Rockcastle are both good programs.
