As any veteran HS basketball observer knows, never count anyone out. Anything can happen in HS sports...but....

 

1) Is there / are there dark horse(s) with even a remotely legitimate shot?

Walton. Anything can happen in a single game. Like NDA in the 9th, a team having a subpar year that could still end up ending your season.

Hate to add fuel to the fire but after looking over Simon Kentons schedule who have they played other then Shelby county? Not downing anyone's school but really I believe as of right now people are getting WAY to over the top for SK with not playing any decent competition! Anyone beg to differ?

Cal and Central were pretty good teams. However, some of the traditional powers in the 9th are having down years and that does impact SOS. Walton is having a relatively down year. The Lex Cath folks rejected our application to get into that tournament, so we did not see that competition this year. SK's level of play has come down a bit, but I believe it was mostly due to playing 5 games in 8 days.

I think you have the two leaders that have separated a little. However, I have not seen gallatin co play so i shouldn't really comment on them. Walton Verona and Anderson co have enough shooters to certainly win on any given night.

The thing that makes sk dangerous is they have a little bit of everything. Shooting, big's guards and can play defense when focused. Need to continue to develop bench to support a very strong starting 5 and improve transition defense. Very well coached

Shelby co is a very experienced team and has a strong first group. There biggest weakness may be overall team speed

 

Then you have the three i al mentioned above should make for an exciting regional

Interesting view, I think anytime teams play outside the 9th people tend to raise questions. So I started looking for SOS ratings and the only one i could find was true rank. Would love to know where to look elsewhere. I've attached a sampling of what they had below

Rule 1

SK has a solid team as does Shelby so I cannot really disagree with those two being the top teams. I would give the nod to SK though due to defensive pressure and physical play. After those two, there are about 6 or 7 teams that are all capable. Now South Oldham played an absolutely horrendous game- all aspects, against Shelby Co (I know you are thinking I am crazy CM) but they are finding their stride and just beat a quality athletic Eastern team last weekend. They fall in that second tier with the likes of Gallatin, who they beat already, WV, and Anderson. Plus Trimble has the height but appears to have been in a funk lately. I guess my point is that there are more teams in that second tier worth considering than just the three mentioned above.

7 of the 8 are ranked in the top 25, and I think they scrimmaged Highlands, so good competion, as with all regions I truly think they are 5-6 teams that can win it, the draw is so key to winning it sometimes

Agreed. And I think this will be especially true this year.

I by know means speak for sk. Rankings dont really mean a whole lot other than bragging rights I try to use them to gauge certain teams but most importantly i want to see them on my own.

As far as Anderson. I have seen them play and I think Shelby and sk are better. However i want disagree that Anderson is capable of winning the 8th

 

I didn't comment on whether I agreed with that ranking. Actually it makes me scratch my head. I just thought it would be a little funny since Anderson has owned the region the last couple of years and some folks may have thought they were finally out of the picture with McKee and Cann gone. Apparently, this ranking system disagrees.

 

As far as my opinion, I agree that rankings mean very little. I also believe that records can mean very little. Many times your record is not just an indicator of how good you are, it is also an indicator of how you scheduled.

 

To answer the question of the thread, NO it is not a two team race. It only appears that it is.

Two horse race? On paper it is, but the game is not played on paper.

I have seen a lot of 2 horse races in my lifetime. Often they find a way to lose.

I don't understand the on paper comment. Wouldn't you place Shelby Co and SK at the top based on actual results?
