Not having SK in the Top 20 is a joke.

Where should SK be ranked then? Has SK been ranked at any point this season? What were the expectations for SK coming into the season? Have they exceeded expectations so far? All undefeated teams should be ranked even if they have no quality wins? All teams that started off the season ranked should be kicked out in favor of SK even though their quality wins are similar?

I think my point was responding to your comment that they have not beat any top 20 teams. The answer is no, but neither have teams ranked 15 - 20 and they all have multiple losses. While some of these loses were against quality teams, They are losses.

It's really hard to rank teams and even if I have seen them all I'm not sure I could even come close to ranking them correctly. However, I have seen Sacred Heart, Holmes, Highlands, Holy Cross, East Carter, Ashland and Etown. Among those teams you have your obvious top class of the state. As I said earlier then I think their is a somewhat distant 2nd tier of 4 or 5 teams maybe a few more. But after that it opens up a little bit.

I'm a basketball fan not an SK fan but I was impressed with them. I'm not sure what their expectation were or are but I don't think that is relevant as to where they are ranked. And no, just because you are undefeated doesn't mean you should be ranked ahead of a team that has a few losses. Etown is clearly the best team in state at this point.

Who do you drop from polls? The team with the weakest schedule and the most losses.

It still needs to be taken into account when those teams lost, why they lost and where they were ranked prior to being where they are currently ranked. It's been over two weeks since the last rankings were released. A lot can happen in two weeks and now we are back to the point to where rankings will likely be released weekly. It's time to sink or swim now. We'll see what happens.

Expectations for SK coming in to the season by folks outside the program were low as a consequence of graduating 7 seniors. Lost in that fact by outsiders is the fact that SK goes 12 deep in their rotation, so they still had substantial experience coming back. Combined with strong feeder programs and a key transfer, you have a team that has reloaded.

Insiders expected this team to be strong, just not this quickly. This coaching staff has both D1 playing and coaching experience and is teaching schemes used in D1 programs making it a magnet for those with next level aspirations.

Most years, Boone, New Cath and NDA would be top 20 teams.

That is a great question so you have me wondering about the rest.

starting from bottom:

#20 Glasgow - no top 20 wins 3 losses to non top 20 teams

19 South Warren - no top 20 wins 3 losses to top 20 teams

18 Sacred Heart - no top 20 wins 3 losses to top 20 teams

17 Murray - no top 20 wins 2 losses to non-top 20 team

16 Allen County Scottsville 1 top 20 win (19 South Warren) 3 losses to top 20 teams

15 Mercy no top 20 wins 3 losses to top 20 team ; 1 loss to non-top 20

14 Bell County 1 top 20 win Allen county Scottsvill ; 2 non-top 20 losses

13 Eastern - 3 top 2- wins

12 East Carter 1 top 20 win ; 2 top 20 losses ; 1 non-top 20 loss

11 Dupont Manual no top 20 wins; 3 top 20 losses

10 Highland - 1 top 20 win Sacred Heart ; one non-top 20 loss. Weak schedule thus far.

9 Holy Cross (Covington) 2 top 20 wins; 1 top 20 loss; 1 non-top 20 loss

8 Franklin County 1 top 20 win

OK I'm finished. Interesting fact is that most of the teams have played each other and a lot have only beaten the lower half of the top 20 teams. I certainly think an undefeated team with a solid schedule belongs in top 20. Ranked #18 SOS in one pole I have seen.

The good news is this is Kentucky High School Basketball. They all have a shot at the title and all of the lip service in the world doesn't mean anything.

I think E-town is the obvious favorite with 4 or 5 second tier teams. Then the field is fairly open after that.

As far as this pole. If you look subjectively you can easily see all sorts of holes.

Incorrect on East Carter, they have 2 top 20 wins, Ashland and Covington Holy Cross AND their non-top 20 loss was to Lafayette

Incorrect on Mercy also, they beat Ashland.

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: ....I guess "high school" schemes and "high school" coaches are doing just fine. Simon has won the region only twice in its nine seasons in the 8th. In the last five years it has been Anderson County 3 times and Walton Verona twice.

That is a nice little write up for your website, but recent history proves other programs have been more successful at winning the region.

I'll be the first to give SK credit. They have accomplished an undefeated season thus far, and been able to find consistency, I didn't think they would have early with 3 freshmen in the rotation. Even though they have done it against teams that combined records are 77-70, it is still worth noting. They have done a great job, just not sure about all this D1 program and scheme stuff.

Besides...Anderson is the only one, I recall in the last few years to have been blessed with D1 players.

Here's my thoughts on all the BGP lists. IMO, they are the most solid list we have. They don't have to wait on nominations or write ups or input from anyone. There are no "well they didn't participate or we don't have representation from that area." I have no idea how they do it, but it always feels like they try to make the best, informed decisions possible. I think the difference in their list and others is they actually put the human and gut factor into it. Sure, they gather all the data, look at records, look at match ups, etc. But I also think once they dwindle their list down, they look at what teams they "feel" are the best and that's why most feel they are the best list to go by. Teams have bad days and even bad weeks, but if you are trying to identify the "top X" number of teams, there is a gut feeling that has to be applied. It's not black and white based on stats or records. You use all the facts to get a repository of teams, but once that happens, you debate on who is better, regardless of every stat and record. That's why their list is generally the most respected. IMO.

For example, Notre Dame in NKY is like 5-8 and actually fell out of the coach's poll in NKY. We played them last night. They aren't in the top 10 in NKY, but they are the 4th best team in the 9th, without a doubt in my mind and I'm sure that will play out over the next couple weeks. So if you look at records and stats, they don't deserve to be in the top 10. If you watch them play and understand who they have played and that they lost 3 key seniors and are just now putting it together with a new PG...my guess is you'd agree that they are no less than the 4th best in the 9th, just behind the three in the top 20 list.

BGP lists may not be perfect, but in my opinion, they are the best we have. (that's not knocking the others. The others are setup where they are dependent of outside factors they can't control all the time)

It has taken 4 years to get these schemes completely in place. They could not be completely implemented with previous personnel. I'm surprised that competing with SK for the last 5 years, that you don't notice the transition? You seem totally unaware that 5 years ago, SK was a halfcourt program.

9 Holy Cross (Covington) 2 top 20 wins; 1 top 20 loss; 1 non-top 20 loss

.

Of course Holy Cross' so-called "non-top 20 loss" was against the No. 2 team in Indiana 4A (with its three D1 commits), in Indianapolis, while playing without their leading scorer, and their point guard playing with a sprained ankle. So if you're presenting that game as evidence that HC might not belong, um, don't. And actually, come to think of it, HC's "top 20 loss" (to East Carter) ALSO came with HC playing without their leading scorer, with their point guard playing with a sprained ankle (she was about 40 percent) and several girls getting over the flu.

But, in general, I agree with you: Polls are fun to look at, and most have some truth in them, but in the end, it's all about play on the court.

Well, I suppose, I am unaware of a lot of things. And if I am unaware of what SK did scheme wise 5 years ago, before I started paying any attention to them 4 years ago, then we can just add it to the list of all the things I am unaware of. It is not that surprising.

More importantly here, the obvious questions that have to be asked when reading your last to post is this....Why in the world has it taken 4 years to get these grand "D1 schemes" in place if SK has these superior D1 coaches and is such a magnet for college level players? Was the "personnel just not there" or is SK a college level player magnet?

I'll admit, I am being a little smart elic here...but I just think your PR sales pitch was over the top.

SK has done a fine job. It is a big school, lots of athletes, and nice coaching, but they are not, "levels ahead" as you made it sound.

C'mon Onceuponatime. Just because that's your screen name doesn't mean I have to buy into all stories and fairytale's. :lol2: (I hope you can appreciate that last bit of humor)

I also was curious about the "magnet" comment. Outside of one good player that chose SK over Scott as her high school choice, I'm not aware of the pool of great players (outside their district) that are knocking down the doors to go to SK. Maybe I'm wrong. But one kid that chose a different school in an open enrollment system doesn't equal kids seeking out SK to play at the next level!

I agree with 7's, SK is a huge school and should be good every year. If they weren't, that's when there should be questions. They have a nice staff for sure, but my guess is that a decent coach would still do well at SK because of the number of girls coming through the doors! And I know there is a player that left SK to play elsewhere. Did she not have aspirations of playing at the next level? I know...her mom went to school where she attends now. But if it was so attractive, I bet she wouldn't have considered the move...since she could attend SK for free!

I would go as far to say this...with Walton's success that seems to be equal to SK, a great coaching staff at Walton and Walton being a smaller school with a great education, why would kids pick SK over Walton? Seems as a parent, Walton competes just fine as a package.

1. Elizabethtown

2. Henderson County

3. Male

4. Ashland

5. Butler

6. Mercer County

7. Holmes

8. Franklin County

9. Covington Holy Cross

10. Highlands

11. Manual

12. East Carter

13. Eastern

14. Bell County

15. Mercy

16. Allen County Scottsville

17. Murray

18. Sacred Heart

19. South Warren

20. Glasgow

This list looks like a pretty good start for 2015. BGP fans can always split a few hairs here and there, often with good reason. Male is up there pretty high, maybe surprisingly to some, but they deserve to be near the top, as does Butler. Eastern could stand to move up a few notches; those who are beating the Simon Kenton drum are probably correct, too. The 11th region isn't represented much - is it down a bit this year; is there another 12th region team close enough to Mercer Co. to join the group in the future?

How many top 20 teams have they beaten?

Just a thought here, Take a look at the overall program over the last few years, If you look SK's Program has been good over the past 5 or 6 years, Some of the other teams are just a 1 year wonder.
