December 18, 201411 yr Is Dawson an "Air Raid" guy? Yeah. Holgerson is one of the big names in Air Raid circles. He's definitely learned from one of the big guys in that regard.
December 18, 201411 yr He does use the air raid but with more vertical pass plays and a simpler running game with more run/pass option plays...
December 18, 201411 yr @BruceFeldmanCFB: Shannon Dawson did a good job at #WVU & he worked well w DH. Ranked No. 9 in O this year, but chance to be a play-caller was too tempting.
December 18, 201411 yr Funny to watch his followers jump on Twitter.... Hope he has notifications turned off!!!
December 18, 201411 yr I'm excited about this hire. This guy is young and will be hungry to prove he's a "play caller". It works well for Stoops as well because Dawson is used to working well under the HC so there shouldn't be a riff when Stoops puts his opinion in... As in slow down, my defense needs a minute... Or don't score so quick!!!
December 18, 201411 yr He didn't call the plays at WVU but a lot of people on Twitter calling it a really good hire. Jones is saying it came down to Dawson, Riley, and another candidate and Stoops chose Dawson due to his offensive philosophy n regards to the Air Raid.
December 18, 201411 yr I believe Stoops likes that Dawson is a more vertical guy than East/West... I realize it takes some East/West and that's an extension of the run game but I believe at times UK did too much of that and became predictable with it. Based on some comments Stoops made throughout the year I believe he felt that way as well.
December 18, 201411 yr Yeah from what I'm reading from WVU fans is that he is a glorified QB coach. Holgorsen called the plays. Not a bad hire though.
December 18, 201411 yr I have a lot of confidence in Stoops' decision-making, and have no reason at all to doubt this choice.
December 18, 201411 yr @KySportsRadio: I am told it was down to Shannon Dawson, Lincoln Riley and one other candidate and Stoops picked Dawson because of offensive philosophy
December 18, 201411 yr He does use the air raid but with more vertical pass plays and a simpler running game with more run/pass option plays... They love to have run/pass combos built into a lot of plays...the qb reads one defender, usually a lb that by numbers is responsible for a wr/rb, if that defender takes the route away that means the qb will run to the place he vacated, all is really the quick game stuff and they mix it up how they block it and who they read....fun stuff! I think the WV offense is one of the best marriages of air raid, zone read, run game, screen game, and vertical passing in the country.
December 18, 201411 yr He does use the air raid but with more vertical pass plays and a simpler running game with more run/pass option plays... Holgorsen and Dawson by extension are of the Leach tree. Leach became more vertical at Tech. Way more aggressive approach to the Air Raid. Expect for the term "packaged plays" to become common on KSR. I just hope they run more 4 Verticals, and call it what Leach did..."6".
December 18, 201411 yr Dawson loves to play very very fast. Also: @KyleTucker_CJ: Source says a big thing in this hire for Stoops was "to keep continuity and verbiage and not take a step back" after two years of Air Raid.
December 18, 201411 yr Yeah from what I'm reading from WVU fans is that he is a glorified QB coach. Holgorsen called the plays. Not a bad hire though. Of course their gonna say that now. Wonder what they thought an hour ago? Bottom line for me is, I like the fact he has something to prove. Most of the time those people are more driven than people that have tasted success at a high level. Successful play calling is achieved through routine, timing and consistency. Most of that is done in practice and the film room. Beyond that, in game situations you mostly depend on a situational play sheet or fall back on something you've had earlier success in... I'm not concerned at all that he didn't call the plays during the game at WVU, I believe he most likely did the harder behind the scene stuff and just built a hunger while doing it.
December 18, 201411 yr @AForknerRivals: This season, West Virginia threw the ball 489 times and rushed 531 times, a ratio of 52 percent to 48 run/pass. Mark Stoops wants balance.
